P/S is really stiff after replacement
P/S is really stiff after replacement
Hey, So I just replaced my Power Steering pump. I installed everything correctly, have proper bent tension(turns 1/2 way), and aired out the system. I had someone turn the wheel back and forth about 15 times while I poured in new ATF fluid and had the return line going into a bin. I pumped through about 3 liters and the wheel was still really stiff to move.
Not sure where to go from here. Pump looked good on install.

was there something wrong with your old P/S pump before you replaced with a new one? If I recalled if the steering wheel is stiff to move, then the pump is not pumping your ATF fluid through the rack & pinion. You might have to look at your reservoir to see if the fluid is circulating.
I know that it's pumping fluid because I have disconnected the return line at the reservoir. I let the fluid pump into a container while having to refill the reservoir because the High Pressure line is sucking it out.
I don't know the flow rate for the Power Steering pump but I'm definitely not going to try and measure it.
Still stuck

Try bleeding it some more.
Lift the front enough to take some weight off the tires but not all the way.
With the car running keep turning from lock to lock.
You may work some more air out of the system.
The system doesn't bleed like brakes or a clutch.

Just wanted to let you guys know, turns out I got a bad pump. The 24mm Banjo bolt that is from the high pressure line going into the pump, it has a flow rate regulator built into that bolt. There was a small pin at the bottom that was ripped out from the casing. It's a clear case of manufacture defect. No biggie, just glad to know that it wasn't my fault.
