Rear valve cover and RTV application

Getting ready to replace the rear valve cover on my 02.

I have the new cover, gasket, plenum gasket and a tube of Permatex 82194 Ultra Grey.

The FSM shows where to apply the RTV, but I'm not sure if you should apply it between the gasket and the engine block or between the gasket and the new cover.

Could someone who has done this job clear this up for me?

I have a feeling I'll see once I take the old cover off but I want to be sure.

Thanks

The glob of RTV goes on the engine block itself, that way when you put the cover on, it will seal the corners.

A little between the gasket and cover wont hurt just to hold it in place while you put it on.

OK, makes sense. Thanks for the input.

Hopefully this will solve my oil leak problem.

Yes, just a dab on the corners and seams on the head.

Remember not to over torque it too. The spec on that is very light and you can crack the valve cover if you gorilla it on there.

Of course, make sure the surface is very clean and grease free.

Got it. Thanks.

Does anyone know how the new cover design is different from the old cover design?

I think the 04+ has replaced the 02-03 so it's the only one available.

Thanks Derrick,

Any idea how the 04+ is different from the 02-03?
