Grand Cherokee beat me at the lights

I was at the lights with 3 other passengers with me in my 2002 6 speed. When the lights turned green the Jeep got a good jump on me. I wasn't trying hard, an shifted at about 4,000 rpm. By the time I hit 40mph he was way ahead.

I guess I need to change my shift points huh? Doesn't help when I have 235 45 17 Blizzaks on, and the roads were a little slushy.

Darn can't wait until summer, and my intake :-)

Re: Grand Cherokee beat me at the lights

Those Grand Cherokees are quick....ESPECIALLY if he cheated and slamed into 4WD low. I can beat damn near anyone in my '99 GC off the line up to about 40 MPH (in 4WD low). My 2002 6-sp Maxima is DEFINATELY faster than the GC (in 2WD)..no doubt about it.

Yeah watch out for the ones with the V8's. I think the 96 model with a V8 was timed at 0-60 in 6.8 sec and that's pretty quick. Quick enough to at least challenge us a little bit. Next time you see one race him from a roll and then you'll smoke him.

Re: Grand Cherokee beat me at the lights

I find that if the roads aren't perfectly dry and I'm trying to accelerate hard I will typically spin all the way through second and most of the way in third.Probably what happened to you.

Try it again when the roads are dry and there's probably no contest.

i almost lost to two high school punks in a 93 V8 grand cherokee..the torque off the line is just amazing on those cars..i had some wheel spin off the line, but it looked like he had an wholeshot..no wheelspin, just strong launch...of course i caught up to them and passed them right after i shifted into 3rd...

Man... SUVs that do 0-60 in anything under 8 should be outlawed. Idiots get in them and think that they are in a sports car just cause it can go fast in a straight line.

they have a lot of low-end torque.... off the line, they will be quick, but may run out of breath at higher speeds....

Seriously? Those pre-70's model?

I drove one during my first few years driving, it was a '68 if i remember correctly. Loved it for what it was but hated that long stick shifter (was like driving a truck!)

I don't know how many were in the Jeep. I had big problem with the Cherokee when I had my 87 Supra with downpipe, 3" exhausts, variable boost control, HKS foam filter. The Supras are heavy, and I did not come too close to the Jeep.

The Maxima will only get better. As I said in slush I can't get traction and I see SUV jump off the line all the time. Wait until I get one of them coming off the off-ramp and I will say 'ta ta for now'. Once in motion Maxima's stays in motion, in grand style :-)

I have a 2000 dodge dakota reg 4x4 with the 4.7 V8 and when it gets wet and/or slushy I put it in 4x4 and can get a massive jump off the line. As for in the dry at first I would get ahead of the max but as soon as I got up to 50 the max would blow the dakota away!!!!!!!!!!!

Its funny u say this...cause I think its the driver that is what makes u loose to an suv...I have a 2001 5spd se loaded and a Jeep Grand limited...I never in my life have lost to an suv no matter what it has under that hood...Its the driver...Learn to shift and when to let out the clutch and trust me, u won't loose...I race cars all the time...I have even beaten the new altima 3.5...I know if I was in a new altima w/ 240hp I would not loose to sumthing with less HP...I even raced against my own Jeep with my brother driving...U just can't drive...

You beat a 3.5 Alty? Uh huh.

I guess you are the Maxima driving god. Please, everyone, take lessons from this guy-He has never lost to an SUV, no matter what is under the hood.

r u people for real? Considering SUV's to be adversaries to the Maxima??? I must admit, they do outrun me when the lights go green and I'm shifting @ 3K, but we're not really racing. Except for the X5 4.4i (i think), 4.6is, IMO anyone with a manual tranny Max can take ANY SUV. All these Escalades, Avalanches have all these V8's for towing, not racing. With automatics and a torquey V8/V6, they have lots of grunt off the line; but after that, their *** is yours.

i agree with there really is no comparison to suv's...i'm sure the new BMW X5is will beat me or the ML 500, but i never had to race one...that is y i will be buying the new GTR (skyline) when it comes out...nuthing like 400hp twin turbo awd 6 spd manual porsche killer...i have a nice escalade (yet to run it) built for show that cranks out 460HP with hydro's, but i dont think i want to run that for speed...talk ta ya's soon

luv me my nissans....had a lot of them....
