2000 3.0 engine tap
Ok I’m new to the site, and my used 2000 maxima se is new to me.
3.0 5 speed. 198xxx. This car was given to me by a very nice lady when I put siding on her house. She knew nothing about the car and was gonna scrap it. One small rust spot on the rear passenger fender, brand new tires and a fading blackbpaint job. I asked if I could look it over and was immediately in love. I saw the stick in the center console, asked for the key. She wouldn’t start. Bad battery terminal. Switched it out. Started right up w a roar. (Exhaust leak) still sounded amazing. Drove it down the road for a little test drive and after about 200 feet the oil light came on and starting making noise. I obviously turned around immediately and parked it. She was bone dry. Further investigation yielded a pin hole in the oil pan. New oil pan on it now w no more leak.
NOW, here is my problem.
I have this wonderful car that I’m in love with, but, it has had a knock since I drove it the first time. It almost sounds like a sticking lifter, probably a bent rod.
I had a local mechanic look at it and he said it’s probably a rod and I’m looking at 8-900$ to tear it apart and figure out which one it is and all that Jazz. I don’t take cars to mechanics, usually my dad and I with some YouTube assistance fix everything but I don’t even know where to start. I am totally hell bent on keeping this car and fixing it. I’ve been told to just get a new motor. And I’ve been told to tear it apart and figure out if one of the rods are bad, or if it’s something else inside. I’m not sure what I should do, income tax is right around the corner and I’ll have the dough to fix it I jus would rather buy new guts if it’s cheaper than buying another motor. I’m sure no one can even tell me what exactly is wrong w it from my description but insight or advice is welcome.
So real quick before I end this, in idle the sound is a mild tap, in first and second it gets louder and then third it quiets a little bit, fourth and fifth it’s almost non existent regardless of my speeed whether I’m going 45 or 80mph.
thanks for your time and any help.
