Shifter issues

Hey everybody! I'm trying to replace my shifter with an sts. I've gotten to the point where the shifter is to be pulled out from the top, but I have no clue how in the hell does someone just pull the shifter through the hole? I don't get it. I've tried shoving that thing through, but because of it's cylindrical shape, and the hole just being a circle, I don't have enough space to get it through. How does everyone else do it?

It's a trick,like a Chinese finger trap.

To pull it through the top. OK if you look at it,you will see at the very bottom it's offset not equal. So instead of pulling it straight up.Which won't work, you have to lean it ,to one side.
