Temporary Brake/Shift Interlock override
Temporary Brake/Shift Interlock override
Hi all,
Got a quick question. I understand that safety equipment is there for a reason and this is a step in my repair procedure. So one could consider this discussion to be purely hypothetical:
Is it possible to remove the mechanical portion of the gearshift lock (which requires depressing the brake pedal to shift out of Park) while waiting to find replacement parts? Some part of the mechanism is not working, and I am toying with the idea of temporarily bypassing the shift lock until I can properly diagnose and locate parts.
I realize there is a slot which something can be inserted into to manually bypass, however I am looking for a more convenient option.
Thanks

Shouldn't be hard. I believe it's just a simple 2 wire solenoid right at the shifter. I'm not sure if the switching is hot or ground but it'll be easy enough to check. Depending on that you should be able to power it up from a constant on or just ground it.
If you remove the console you should be able to find and remove the lockout all together.

I do agree, however a lot of forums have rules prohibiting the discussion of defeating safety measures since the brain dead also have access to these sites, so I wanted to play it safe!
I would fix it if it's not that hard. Not because you need it but because there could be liability if someone else drives the car. Someone could start it in gear or put it in neutral and have it roll off. If you're the one who disabled it you could be held responsible for anything that happens.
