As soon as I see someone actually pull a 5.4 on the street or at the track then I will believe it. Friday night there was a guy with a bone stock WRX at the track. He said he was taking it easy on the car, but the best he ran was a 14.90. Now I know that it could pull a 14.4 or so, but it is hard to lauch a turbo car - especially one that's awd.

These cars are quite different. It's like asking which is better between the following:

Wing Chun Kung Fu
Hap Ki Do
Aikido
Thai Boxing
Brazilian Jujitsu
Roman Grecko Wrestling
Jeet Kune Do

The driver/participant makes a big difference

Ok, MotorTrend says 5.6 seconds. The driver makes all the difference.

What is the hard part? Tach it up real high, drop the clutch. The AWD will take over. Unless there is something I am missing...

What I love about my buddy's WRX is

there is no wheel hop when the clutch is dropped like what our Maximas exhibit. There is also very little time wasted spinning tires since all 4 wheels can get power.

you are missing something man...

tons of smell of burned clutch , and ruining the tranny which not a lot of people want to do, so if you want to beat the **** out of your car, you don't miss anything but if you want to keep it in shape you are missing a lot

First off, your question is missing a very critical component - what type of race? SOLO1, SOLO2, 0-60, 1/4 mile, top speed? With the same driver/conditions I'm sure that my Max would smoke the IS300 0-60 and 1/4 mile. SOLO1 might be a toss up, it would mostly lie in whether or not the Max had a chance to get on the motor, if the track is extremely technical (which most aren't) then the Max should do it. SOLO2 should be a completely different story, parking lot pylon stuff, again as long as it's technical, should see the IS300 as the victor.

I'm only basing my opinion above on the 6spd Max vs. the IS300 manual tranny as that's the only car on your list that I've driven. It's a little jewel when it comes to handling, but like most of Toyota's cars, it's way underpowered. That chasis is begging for at least another 70 hp.

My modded 94 Z28 used to regularly thrash a highly modded Doug Rippie ZR-1 Corvette in SOLO2 racing, but was very close to losing to the same car/driver at Shannonville quite often. The owner/driver of the ZR-1 was just a rich guy that couldn't drive worth a ****, but I'm positive that if I drove his vette and compared times with my Camaro it would have trounced the Z28. Yet, in all this, on the same days, there was always this little Datsun 510 that could run with my Z, no matter whether it was the big track or the parking lot pylon stuff. The only time I'd really pull away from that little mosquito was when I could get onto the back straight. Otherwise the thing could just fly through the corners. Mind you, it was modded quite heavily as well, but I'm sure it didn't put out near the power my Z did.

The situation of the race is very critical in your question, all else being equal.
