FIXD say P1440 EGR Valve Open

So I took it to my mechanic (here in FL), who is excellent, but he didn't want to touch it. She's a Michigan car, 2001 Anniversary, and more than a little rusty. From what I have found on this site, or more so NOT FOUND, is it won't be an easy thing to fix. However, my mechanic in Michigan says P1440 could be several things but not causing any harm (that was last July 2018).

But I now smell gas when I start it and my mileage has gone from 30 MPG down to 8 MPG.

Any and all suggestions are welcome. Yes, I'm female. I can rebuild the carb in my lawnmower (youtube) but anything else is way over my head like a 747 (or crashed, LOL. I know, bad joke).

THANK Y'ALL --- Jan

Your maxima does not have an EGR valve they deleted that in late 2001 model year what you need check is the build date on your car if it was build after 2/2001 then you don’t have EGR Valve that’s not the cause of smelling gas. You have a possibly an issue with EVAP system which can be a crack hose or charcoal canister is saturated with fuel or the EVS purge solenoid not working which is mounted on the intake manifold

Build date 10/00 ... so I should have an EGR valve, somewhere. Next question, where is it?
