Why 2 crank position sensors ?

I'm wondering why our cars have 2 crankshaft positioning sensors? Every other car I have owned only has had one.

Please, thanks, live long and prosper.

There is only one CRANKshaft position sensor. There are two CAMshaft position sensors (for the reason mentioned above.)

3.0s have two, 3.5s have one. Always worth mentioning which car is being talked about since this subforum effectively shares two generations and things that apply to one car dont always apply to the other.

As for why the 3.0s have two, no idea. Redundancy maybe? Nissan went back to one crank sensor with future iterations as already pointed out, so i guess the reasoning wasnt all too solid in the first place.

Woops this is correct, my mind just always goes straight to the 3.5 engine when talking about 5th generation simply because that's all I've owned.

Two purposes:

1. Ignition timing;

2. Tachometer and/or engine speed monitoring.

The function of the crankshaft position sensor (POS) is to allow the engine management system to initiate ignition (spark) at the appropriate time prior to a given piston reaching top-dead-center.

The function of the crankshaft position sensor (REF) is to determine engine speed for the purpose tachometer operation and fuel management.
