Shifting problem 2002 Maxima (96,000 miles)

There is some resistance when I shift from Neutral to Drive. I have to force it and usually I would end up at '2". Even if I am lucky enough to get to 'D" I found that the engagement is rather "shallow". Any idea what is wrong?
Thank you.

Cable and/or linkage is binding. Tear it apart and check it out.

Check the PNP switch operation. Park neutral switch is in engine bay, on transmission, behind driver's headlight. See if nut is on okay. Make sure lever moves smoothly through the gears.
