Thermostat Under Intake Manifold

Hey guys! I have a 2001 Nissan Maxima. When I started my car about to leave work I noticed that my temp gage was flickering after about 20 seconds of being in the car. The temp was cold because i had just worked a full shift so i thought it was really odd. That was 2 days ago. Today on the way back from the gas station (literally not even half a mile from my house) I was stopped at a red light and smelt like something was burning. Definitely didn't smell sweet like antifreeze. I noticed smoke coming from the driver side of the engine bay. My temp gage was normal but I still hurried home to be safe. When i got home and popped the hood I noticed the smoke looked like it was predominantly coming from near the thermostat that's under the intake manifold I guess it's called "water control valve." So I replaced the thermostat, hooked everything back up and all her fluids looked fine. The radiator was full, overflow was in between MIN & FULL. Oil didn't look milky or anything. Now the bastard won't start. It cranks but won't turn over. I noticed I couldn't hear the fuel pump turning on. I tried using some starter fluid and it tried starting but basically sputtered out like after 5 seconds. Im going to check the plugs this weekend i just haven't had the time yet. What are some other things it could possibly be if the plugs end up being fine? Any help is appreciated, thanks in advanced.
