twin turbo 3.5

Hey
I don't have a maxima, but the engine is going to be in the new z car, and I will be getting one of those. I was wondering about the engine, can the VQ be turbo'd easily?
I was looking at the engine picture on the nissan website, and it doesn't look too tough at all. Anyone think they'll make stock tt 350z's?
I know there is a supercharger out, but that doesn't really appeal to me. I have a solara now, and thought it'd be faster, but it turns out there's no aftermarket support and even sc'd it's just not enough. whatever.
anyway, does anyone think this'll be tt easily like the last one?

Re: twin turbo 3.5

Well I would like to state that I'm ignorant and my opinion doesn't count for much but:
The problems people had when turboing maximas is the space, there just not enough space to easily stick one(let alone two) turbos and associated tubing with the way engine is (tightly, transversly)mounted in the compartment. Now new Z has its engine mounted front to back which should make for more space to work with on the sides of the engine so it might be easier there.

I've seen pics of the engine compartment on the new Z... very tight, but not impossible... hey, if u got the cash, someone will find a way. But guaranteed, it won't be cheap... and keep in mind about the ODB2.... may cause engine lights to go off left and right!

There will never be a twin turbo max. One is hard enough. Good luck to you.

Nissan's been tight-lipped as to the exact specs and setup of the 350Z because as of right now, the engine isn't finalized since they fell short of their power goals (magazine first drives are saying the new Z is slower than they expected). I'm willing to bet the VQ35 will have serious catback restrictions. Also, as SFMax mentioned, OBD2 will be a serious problem, JWT does not program ECU's equipped with OBD2 so the only option would be standalone EMS. Wiring an aftermarket EMS is a royal PIA.

If TT is what you need to have, be prepared to spend a fortune. Pray that you have tuned it perfectly to prevent detonation, the rods and cast pistons will be toast after one round with detonation. Not trying to be the bearer of bads news, just trying to point out the obstacles if you do pursue this. It definitely can be done, I've seen tighter engine bays. Just look at the turbo F-Body's and early gen Q45's, the engine compartments in those cars are tighter than the new Z's looks to be. Good luck!

Um, we have forged pistons =) I believe our internals are pretty buff,
only thing will be to lower the compression ratio to something managable. As always it comes down to how much cash you're willing to spend.

So you have a SC'd solara? Have you thought about a smaller pully ratio and maybe increased cooling to compensate? I see no reason why you can't bump that engine to 300HP with a new intake, exhaust and smaller pully.

Why do you want twin turbos anyway? Everyone w/ twins goes and swiches to a single.

hmmmm

They got 327hp out of the 350z engine when they were doing testing at Bonneville. They only had to do mild re-configuration of ECU and intake, but they brought down the overall numbers to increase longevity of the engine. I forget the tq. figure but it was around 300ish. Should be interesting to see what the final numbers are.

lag, use 2 smaller turbos at same boost as a larger single, it wont be as efficient, but itll have less lag. Although on a FWD car like the maxima, lag would help at the drag strip, considering the traction problems of FWD.

Haha. Nice one. How much lag is there on a 10:1 stock compression maxima engine??
