in the quest for cooler intake temps I am considering stuffing some insulation under the intake manifold in the valley of the engine to keep heat away from the intake manifold.. I got the idea a while back when I noticed on a Traverse I was changing spark plugs on had insulation in the engine valley. I am thinking of stuffing towels in there. here's some info i looked up on cotton combustion temps.
I think this would trap heat in rather than keep it out. The heat is generated by the motor, and the intake is attached to the motor, so adding insulation would just prevent the heat from radiating off. NWP phenolic spacers supposedly show notable reduction in intake temperatures, thats probably your best bet. I think that sort of stuff though is in the same vein as weight reductions, where it takes an enormous amount of effort to squeeze out a minuscule result. Makes sense for people trying to shave points off of their 1/4 mile times, but for a daily, i dont think you would notice all too much benefit.
Intake manifold temps are probably going to be most heavily the result of conductive heat (heads/port mating surface), which you have addressed with spacers. I like the way you're thinking though, I notice a significant increase in power in 50° outside temps vs 90° in my car. My car interior is completely gutted though, and there is literally nothing else in the car. Sounds like a tin can with rocks in it, but it is indeed lighter, and with the 2nd gen VQ, small increases/decreases in power are quite noticeable.
You just need to do a swap. You'll be so much happier with the added power and different power mods. Plastic intake manifolds.
the swap is eventually going to happen just a matter of when. I just had the tranny out and apart for the H-LSD, JWT flywheel and Z clutch along with other bolts ons I put on in the past few months. I kind of want to take a break from doing major work on this car. working 6 nights a week has me tied up. I still have new fairings I haven't put on my bike that came in back in late November, one fork tube also needs to be rebuilt..
