Navigation (GPS) ??

Where is the gps antenna? I noticed you have to have a sunroof with the navi option. Is it embedded into the sunroof frame?
For anyone that has navi, is it worth it? I like the fact it uses gps to tell where you are. I know there was an update cd released already. Just curious.

I just installed the Pharos StreetNav system in my car. It works with my HP Jornada 568.

For a nice demo of what and how it works, a company called Destinator
has a nice demo on their website.
The GPS systems will cost you anywhere from $250-$300

Cool thanks. Where is the antenna?
I got to thinking about this today since my wife called me when she got lost in NJ. Like I'm supposed to tell her the way out...frustrating. GPS would have helped.

I just checked out the destinator website and I really liked the product. I might have to buy it. Have you tried going on a long trip with this product? How does it work when switching from one map to another?

Thanks,
Jay

GPS antennas typically look like this.

That is the GPS active antenna we used in our senior design project at college. The square box is about 2" x 2". Somewhere on your car there has to be something like that (Note the antenna is not like a cell phone or cordless phone antenna. In order to pick up the frequencies that GPS operates on a triangular shaped piece of metal is usually used with some sort of amplification on it.) It also can't have it's signal blocked. It will work through glass, but not metal. It could be in the front dash under the plastic up by the front defrost. It could also be in the rear view mirror. It's really hard to say. They could have put it in the bumper if they wanted to. You could ask at your dealer. They might know.

I have had my car since March . I have it and I love it. It's not simply a Map, it's a restaurant guide, ATM , Gas Station, Nissan Dealer, etc.. locator . If you take the Navi disc out, it becomes a Single Touch Screen CD player..... It also provides on screen climate control. The Navi system itself has Voice guided assistance, or simply visual, you chose. You can choose a Highway route, or surface streets.....

In order to put it on a 2K or 2K1, you would have to buy the Bose Radio that I have, and change the entire instrument cluster down the middle. It would be cheaper to go get an aftermarket one. I have the Discs to all the regions... Its well worth the $2000, if you ask me .

1.. Yes. this will require a good shop to do the work... I have consulted with 3 different sources..

2. No .. There is extensive circuitry throught the vehicle that links up to the Navi... The climate control itself on cars with Navi runs off the screen. If you really want Navi, an aftermarket system is a better way to go....

Yes it can be done, but it will cost you so much $$ , it's not worth it. You can get a good Aftermarket setup with a DVD based system, that plays Movies, and Mp3's for the same cost !....

If I recall correctly, the manual says the navi antenna is located under the passenger seat.

As it was explained to me...
Nissan Reps might be lurking on the boards. We wouldn't want them to catch us engaging in illegal activities, would we?

Try Mapopolis http://www.mapopolis.com/ .. It has voice nav and uses Navtech data. It routes FAST! Will not have all the POI as a DVD based system. I've compared its map data (streets) to new G35 w/nav and surprisingly Mapopolis was MUCH better. Obviously data is updated monthly and they use a very high compression scheme on the PPC.

I have it and use it alot. Love it.

Voice is clear, screen is fairly customizable so you can see as much or as little as you want.

This is the best CF hardware
http://www.semsons.com/holcfgpsrecw.html
then you upgrade for $55 to Mapopolis if you want Voice Nav. The platinum it comes with will route and beep. Upgrading to Navigator, for the diff in price, give you dynamic routes and voice.

Going to my wife's christmas party, alot of the people with in-car nav got lost because there are 3 streets with the same name (cir, st and dr). For some reason the newer road didnt show, and they went to the wrong side of town this of course is simple the lack of timely updates to the car nav data. (still NavTech).
