P0462 issue

Hi all, I’m trying to pass inspection and having issue with the codes P0462. Past 6 months my gas meter has been wonky - sometimes it’s half, will jump to full, etc. From what I understand it’s either the cluster or the Fuel Sending unit. Thinking I’ll either buy the parts or go to junk yard and try them. Do you all recommend trying the cluster first or the sending unit? Anyone else that has had this issue? Thoughts? Also if I change the cluster will that screw up my odometer?

Thanks! Appreciate any help.

if you change the cluster, the different cluster will show a different mileage, new mileage will get recorded when you go do your inspection. Not that mileage really matters anymore with the age of the 5th gen but it can show up as altered on vehicle history report and get you a branded title because of mileage. Only way to keep your original mileage on the new cluster, you'll need to pull the cluster apart, set cluster in test/calibration mode, record needle position, pull needles off, pull face off, unsolder an eight pin through hole ic chip and put it on the new cluster, put cluster back in test mode and replace needle and hope you get all the needles in the correct position.

Having said that.....if you're not sure if it's your cluster or your sending unit, it's much easier to just swap the sending unit or pull the sending unit out from under the rear seat. Figure a way to get the float to sit in a middle position where your gauge will read constantly, reset your cel and go for a drive to get things ready for inspection. You'll need to set the float somewhere in the middle, it can't be full or empty or you'll never get evap testing done and car will have a hard time being ready for inspection. Evap monitoring will only be done by the ecu if tank is less than full and not near empty. Also, if your were able to secure the float in a position where it will read on the cluster, you already have your answer to what part is bad and what you need to replace.

Dang, that sounds way more complicated than I was anticipating hah. Was hoping I could just replace the cluster and then the PCM would update the odometer or something digital.

I’ll try this Sending unit trick you mentioned - Really just trying to pass inspection. I just reset the trip meter whenever I fuel up and it gives me an idea how much gas I have. Car runs great, just this gas meter hurdle is annoying. Thanks for the input!

So I changed out the sending unit and cleared the codes. Still getting this P0462(fuel tank level sensor - low input) code. Also before changing the sending unit my gas gauge was stuck at empty. After putting in a new sending unit it shows full. Any ideas of how to fix this or what could be going on?
