HR Swap - No Baffle Plate?

Hey doing the HR swap on my 2002 Max using the Nisformance kit. Lucked out and got a brand new VQ35 for a '13 Altima on ebay for $1400 from some dealership that was going out of business. Just wanted some clarification, the writeup says to re-use the DE oil pan but get rid of the baffle plate. I assumed that meant to scrap the DE baffle plate but keep the one already intalled in the HR engine. However, I cant get the DE oil pan on the new motor, I think it's hitting the plate. So do I remove the HR baffle plate on there and go with no baffle plate? I have no idea what a baffle plate does just wanted to make sure it was ok.

Not sure if you have Facebook account, but there is a group called Nissan 2nd Gen VQ35DE FWD swap info and it has 4.6K members. I'm pretty sure that you'll get a much quicker response there.

Good luck with the swap!

i used the baffle plate that came with the HR engine, I took a grinder to whatever was on the inside bottom of the DE pan that kept it from mounting flush...

Yeah the baffle plate is designed to keep oil in the pan so that the pickup tube leading to the oil pump isn't starved during turns/acceleration/braking. I, personally, wouldn't want to run the engine without it and I do eventually plan on doing the same swap so i'm glad to see there's a workaround.

the most common thing that's usually done is to keep the DE windage tray and remove the one that mounted to the crank caps on the HR engine. I just thought it would be better if I could use the one that came with the HR so I was able to make it work. from what I remember, I just cut out the mounting tabs that the DE windage tray mounted to on the bottom of the pan. I believe it was just the 2 close to the flywheel.

I also could have used the HR oil pick up and lower pan for higher oil capacity but I knew I was going to lower my car a little more so I stuck with the DE lower pan and pick up.

Thanks for replying you guys are awesome. I didn't know keeping the DE baffle plate and removing the one bolted to the HR engine would have worked, that would have been easier for me but too late I already ground the mounting tabs off, and am going to install it in the morning. I did a test fit earlier, and somehow it still feels like its hitting something. I can take the HR oil pan that I removed from the new engine, and just drop it on without the rubber half moon gaskets, and it just sits flush. I can't do that with my DE pan even with a lot of grinding that I've done to it. I almost think my old pan might be warped somehow. But, with those rubber gaskets installed I think I will have enough clearance to use my DE pan with the HR baffle plate as planned. Im just going to bolt it all down tomorrow with the silicone and see what happens. I dropped one of those stupid rubber o rings into the engine by accident, going to Harbor Freight now to get some really long pliers to hopefully get it out.

nice

one thing I always recommend is to prep real good before using silicone. i usually use rubbing alcohol and clean both surfaces until no oil residue is showing on the paper towels. seems excessive but it really sucks doing the oil pan job with it in the car. I also give the silicone 24 hours to fully cure before adding oil and starting the engine up..

you can prime the engine using the starter wire next to the battery and jumping it to the positive terminal.

I'll be figuring this out soon as well...Sounds like the oil pickup is longer since the lower oil pan is deeper from the HR engine. I would think since the Upper and lower oil pan is used from the DE the oil baffle and oil pick up are used as well from the DE and everything matches. This only makes sense to me. Hey uptownsamcv I'm an Acetone/ MEK guy Alcohol doesn't clean anything like it! My DE has a slight leaking Head gasket and I found a 2022 Maxima engine with about 14K and for $1000. I want to install the NISFORMANCE Billet symmetrical oil pump, ARP rod bolts, and 3.5" intake tube...I have nearly every bolt on and with a tune I should be well over 300 whp.

Once I get everything here I'll try to take as many pictures as possible...The 14K engine fell through the business was For Sale but since I've for a $700 unknown mileage Murano 3rd Gen VQ35DE and a 2022 Maxima VQ35DE for $1250 shipped. The latter is for my 2003 Maxima, the unknown mileage motor will be used for building another engine with all the upgrades.
