5th Gen auto Transmission to 4th gen
5th Gen auto Transmission to 4th gen
Ok I have made the swap, I have put my 02 trans into my 98 car I wired the solenoids to the 4th Gen TCM but the problem I am having now so far is when I go to shift in to R or D it kinda clunks then dies but if I shift it into N quick enough it stays running but then I try to go to D it dies as well, oh it doesn't want to turn over sometimes unless I jimmy the shifter a little also it won't start from N, I adjusted the selector per the FSM but no changes, I've seen the other threads about this swap but they are pretty vag, Do i need to swap VBs or maybe just Solenoids please if anyone could help , im stuck in my dads driveway and its starting to get old working on this, lol ....
Update
Swap is in and running great, what all I had to do was on the 5th Gen Transmission was take out the outer revolution sense on the transmission which is located driver side close to the axle you pull the original one out i left it there plugged in cause you'll notice that the 4th Gen trans only has one sensor there not two like the other, so I removed the sensor from the 4th gen and installed into the 5th also put a bigger o-ring on it, then next was that on the 4th Gen has a sensor on the back of the trans on the driver side its only a 10mm holding it in and on the other trans there's a cap there remove one cap and install the bigger o-ring and it will pop right in i believe that its either for the cruise or speedo cause it has a gear on it. Then next I took the PNP switch off the 4th gen and put it on the 5th Gen before you do that is the only somewhat complicated part is you need to cut off the selector bracket off the the 4th and the 5th to install the 4th on the 5th so the shifter cable will still work. Alls I did was took a angle grinder and cut it on the transmission side flush to the bracket, once off I drilled out the bracket so it'll slide onto the 5th Gen and just plug welded it make sure you mark the orientation of the bracket when in P position, then I cut the plug from the 4th gen solenoid harness to splice it to the 5th so you can use your cars harness, lucky which took me a flipping week to finally realize the wire colors are the same you can match them by looking at the plug you cut off and the plug on the cars harness it plugs into, much easier than staring at both of the FSMs, also I kept the 4th gen TCM and at first I thought I could just repin the plug to coordinate to the 5th gens but leave it alone do it at the harness on the trans side. I'll add pics soon so it's easier to understand than my attempt of a write up.. Well I hope my misery can help someone else cause believe me trying to do this on my own was just that but I figured it out and now there's a write up (attempt at one lol) on it, hope this helps anyone's attempt at the swap...
