First Oil Change: the later the better?

Hi Gang,

Regarding the first time engine oil change for my 2k2 6spd, someone one on Toyota RAV site said 600mile is the time of great tear and wear with small residue inside the engine oil, so it is for the owner's good to chang it at this time.

But american honda owner's site has the following description:

http://www.ahm-ownerlink.com:80/Main...q=oil#oilfirst

"
Why should I wait to change the oil the first time?

Your Honda engine was delivered with an oil that is specially formulated for new engines that have not yet developed their "natural" wear patterns and may contain minute particles from the manufacturing process.

American Honda strongly recommends this special oil be left in the engine long enough forthese wear patterns to develop, usually until the first maintenance interval specified in your Owner's Manual, based on your specific driving conditions."

Question is which one is correct, does Nissan has the special engine oil for new car?

thanks

oil

I have never heard that Nissan uses a "special" oil from the factory.
I have read before that it is good to put in fresh oil at 1000 miles, but with the new type of engine production you could likely just follow the owners manual and wait until at least 5000. I like to use Synthetic and have always changed to Mobil-1 within the first 1000 miles. Some have said to wait until 5000 miles before using sysntheitc so the engine can break in correctly, but I have never seen anything offical from Nissan on this.

Glad somebody asked this, 'cause I was just getting ready to. I just today went over 1000 miles in my 2002 SE 6-spd. I have heard both arguments ("do it now" vs "wait until your 2nd-3rd oil change) concerning changing over to synthetic oils. So far, the oil on the dipstick looks as fresh as when I picked up the car.

Interestingly, all new Chevrolet Corvettes come from the factory with synthetic oil (Mobile 1) in the pan from mile #1. The recommendation from most C5 experts is to change the oil around 1000 miles to carry away any contaminates/shavings/cigarette butts left over from the manufacturing process.

Of course, Chevy piston rings probably break in while the starter motor turning over the engine!!!

Anyway, sure would like to hear from any 5th Generation experts about this.

What is sysntheitc oil? What kind of oil does Nissan fill into the new engine?

After I had the oil changed, the car did feel much smoother.

just my typing too quickly...sysntheitc oil is synthetic oil...sorry!
As far as I am aware, Nissan just uses plain old regular (dyno) oil in their new engines. Nothing special.

That says "your HONDA engine" because you're reading a Honda site. Read the MAXIMA owner's manual and it will NOT tell you that your Maxima engine was delivered with special oil additives.

Read The F***** Manual.

Just out of curiosity, how many times has this question been answered?

From NissanDriven.com... http://www.nissandriven.com/owning/V...,00.html#AS770

How often do I need to have the oil changed in my vehicle?
Section 9 of your owner's manual gives a full explanation of the types of maintenance as well as the time intervals when the services should be performed.

yeah, my honda come with "special" oil from the factory, yippee!!!
ok, enough of that, what is the recommended oil change interval for the 2k2 max? i remember i read in the manual that it was every 3750 miles(this was for a 2k1 max). the manual for my civic says under regular driving conditions, change the oil every 10,000 miles it says change it every 5,000 miles under severe conditions, thats what i'm going to do. realisticly, can i drive a car "under normal conditions"(whatever that is), and get 10,000 miles between oil changes? i saw on a honda forum a guy that has 80,000 miles and has only had ONE oil change! is that even possible?
anyway, my opinion, change you oil at 1,000, then at 3,000, and then every 3,000 miles. i mean come on, you spent $25-$30k for you car, whats a couple extra oil changes?

if you really want to know how long you can use your oil send it to the lab. Blackstone labs will do an oil analysis for $19 and tell you of your oil is still good. For regular oil, I'd stick with 3000 mile oil changes, longer for systhetic.
