Place Racing Engine Mounts -- Quality Control!!!! grrrrrr

Well, today was my day to go have the engine mounts I bought from Cattman. Beautiful sunny day in Seattle and after just installing my intake and y-pipe this weekend, I was looking forward to getting the mounts to complete my first major upgrade weekend since the standard suspension tie-ups.

Well, lucky me...Place Racing put the front mount together backwards. It looks likes somebody stamped the arrow on the mount pointing in the wrong direction, causing whoever filled the mount with the polyurethane to point the bushing the wrong direction. Once mounted on the support beam, the hole in the mount and the bolt holes on the engine itself were offset by, at least 5/8" if not a little more. No chance of reinserting the bolt.

After playing around, we discovered the problem (described above)...when you flip the mount around backward, the bolt holes line up perfectly...however one side of the bushing needs to protrude about 1" and the other side is flush, so putting it on backwards isn't an option (without some serious work with a pair of pliers and a blowtorch...getting medieval).

So, end of story, no new engine mount experience to discuss. However, I will be having an interesting phone call with Cattman about paying the cost of having my mechanic do the work (since I wasn't comfortable removing engine mounts on my own) and replacing the parts with ones that were put together properly.

I will update everyone with my customer service experience with Cattman and/or Place Racing as the process moves forward.

Ooops forgot to mention that, the arrow is placeed wrong, but my Mechanic just turned it the around and he said it fit perfectly.

You may have to contact Place Racing since it will be their product. Thanks

Are you kidding? Was that a joke? If so, it was a cruel one. If you turned the mount around, the bushing is not flush on the side it is supposed to be flush and flush on the side it is supposed to protrude out an inch or so. What's with that?

Ummm, engine mounts are not going to match up perfectly. Basically you have to force them to match up to fit just right. Obviously you never replaced mounts before in your life. I have done 3 cars so far...

The bolt was out of alignment by more than the diameter of the bolt itself...I would estimate more than 5/8". The engine and mounts should not have to be moved that far just to get the mount installed. Once the support beam was bolted up to the frame, there was no way that the polyurethane insulation on the mounts was going to "give" enough to allow me to "force" the holes to match up. Polyurethane is exceptionally stiff/strong, hence their use in the heavy-duty mounts from Place Racing.

In addition, it just so happened that turning the mount around backwards caused the holes to align perfectly. Don't you think its rather strangely coincidental that the bolt was, perhaps, 3/4" misaligned when turned the correct orientation but happen to align perfectly when rotated 180 degrees? It would seem evident to me that the bushing was set backwards when the mount was insulated.

Obviously, you are such a automobile genius your opinion will really go a long way with me. Almost pointless for me to debate such a mechnical wizard. I imagine, however, that the mechanic I was working with has probably replaced engine mounts on more than three cars, but it is good to hear that your car knowledge extends fully to engine mount replacement.

Why do you start so many of your posts with "Ummm." Is that supposed to make me feel like you're thinking real hard or something?

It's called adjusting the engine to fit the hole of the mount. Real simple fix.

sorry no joking
I wish I could give more detail, but from what my mechanic said, is that he just turned the mount around and it fit perfectly.

Yeah, we had that conversation...it would have fit but not the way the stock mount is set. There would have been some extra space on the side where the bushing was flush.

I'll apologize first off for being such a smart-***, just in case you were really trying. Your previous post just read really rough and I couldn't resist.

I'm serious, when I say that the movement was just too much in this case.

Even though Russ

has come off as somewhat of an *** on this one he is right. On my 70 Cuda I had to us about 400 gazillion foot lbs. of force to get them on. Generally mounts are a pain in the ***, sorry to here about your bad luck, maybe Cattman can give you some advice.
