!!6 Speed Problems!!

Last week i was driving in a parking garage up the ramps in 2nd gear and i heard this wierd screeching sound... like metal on metal contact / a dying squirrel ... now this is the 3rd time i heard it and only have less than 4000 miles on it and i thought it was transmission problems so i went to nissan yesterday to get it looked at... the mechanic took my car out and we went to a hilled road where he stopped 1/2 way up the hill and put it in first. When he engaged the clutch, it started to screech like crazy... so basically, to make a long story short, the nissan 6th gen clutch for my car is DEFECTIVE, the sound is produced when the two plates are rubbing against each other. He ordered me a new clutch and assured me that it was not the transmission because it would screetch in every gear, but he added that if the sound continued after he replaced the clutch, then to take it back in.

just giving u other 6 speeds out there a heads up

If it is the clutch that is defective then why is it agian that you wouldn't hear the noise in all gears? I think it is something else.

ha!

yeah, thats nissan service logic for you.. completely backwards. I agree, the clutch would be all gears.

you arent alone.. many 6sps are failing it seems, do a search here..

Well, because it is an engagement issue and you may not hear it at speed...
It seems they have taken responsibility and that is a good thing.

the guy said that it was the clutch because when it got heated up, the plates warped, anyway... however it does seem odd that he would deduce it was the clutch because it didnt make the sound in any other gears.... but needless to say, my car makes the most torque in 1st and 2nd gears so its very hard on the clutch there.

The clutch can't handle heat? So their answer is to replace it with the same one that can't handle the heat. INteresting

Unless you have been abusing your car with 6K RPM clutch dumps then I doubt it is defective already. However, anything can happen. If indeed the plates were warped then you would feel it in every gear.

Just for the heck of it, which version of the limited slip differential do you have?

Mine does the same thing, especially in reverse at a slow pace, while backing into my driveway. It is a bad clutch or Flywheel. I will take it eventually and get it looked at.

What PLATES?? There's only one clutch plate....not two. I'm assuming that this is your first manual transmission car since you are 17. I'm also ASSUMING that you drive your car rather hard. When I was 17 I beat the living cr@p out of my 88 Acura Legend. My advice to you is.....when you get a new clutch...try to be a little nicer to this one...and make sure that you aren't riding the clutch because that alone will heat it up a significant amount.

I have owned a '89 Acura Integra. I drove that puppy to 179,000 miles and sold it, still running fine, in great condition.

Classically, the 5spds used to be MUCH more reliable than the automatics... (if that makes you feel any better about getting a manual)

As for 2k2 models, it's anyones guess..

it really did sound like a dying squirrel... one of those sounds you hope NEVER to hear coming from your car

anyway... i hope to god itz just the clutch, but some of you members have got me worried that it mite be the transmission. Good point that if it made the sound only in 1st and 2nd that it cant be the clutch..

we shall see... i'll have an answer hopefully by friday

Why couldn't be the clutch? Wouldn't there be less torque on a taller gear, therefore the clutch isn't slipping to cause the noise? Maybe I have this backward?

the 6-speed seems to be getting the reputation of the 89 to 91 Maxima automagics and the TL/CL automagics.......not good.

And you should consider the following name change:

20 MAXIMA 02 => 20 MINIMA 02

since all 6-speeds are considered Minimas....

Here's what I said:

....the 6-speed seems to be getting the reputation....

Notice the word seems. That isn't an absolute adjective.

However, everytime I visit this forum, I see a 6-speed problems thread.....Nissan also took more R&D time than expected to get the 6-speed out. I smell a rat, and believe Nissan hurried it in without thorough QA testing, which they are known to do.

I think it's cause he upgraded from a very well built 3rd gen to a somehwat shoddy 4th gen . . .

Bill, if it's any help, all carmakers are going down in terms of quality control, not just Nissan. Benzes used to have rock solid reputations. Not so much anymore. Acura is in the same boat as Nissan. Toyota is getting there as well. I had a Supra with a blown head gasket. It was a very common problem. The new Seinna's seem to be trouble prone from the factory as well. Profit mnargins for manufacturars are going down. Something's got to give.

Despite the fact that the quality of a 4th gen and later is not up to the 3rd, that thing labelled VQ in the engine bay does a helluva alot to compensate, I would think.

It does for me anyways
