Just ordered new wheels/tires
I always wondered why people posted about ordering new stuff...always wondered why they didn't just wait until they got it and then posted. But now I know...it's because we get so excited and just can't wait!!
I ordered the 17-inch silver Nakayama Phantom GTR and Bridgestone Potenza RE950s. Got the wheels at victoriatire.com and the tires from 1010tires.com. Awesome prices: $165/wheel and $132/tire. The wheels are replicas of SSR GT1s.
Should hopefully have them on my car within two weeks. I'll post pictures when I do.
See the wheels at:

Here are the pics. My digital camera leaves much to be desired, but you get the idea. Also new are the Maxspeed springs, which lowered the front 1-1/8 inches and the back 5/8 inch. I also added 35% tint.

Help me out here . . .
Why would ANYONE buy 17" wheels that are only 7" wide? Can someone explain this to me? BTW, what size RE950s did you purchase, Tony? If they're 235/45R17s, they're TOO WIDE FOR YOUR RIMS! And, of course, RE950s aren't made in 225/50R17.
Check this out. ANY DEALER THAT MOUNTS 235/45R17 TIRES ON 7" WIDE RIMS IS VOIDING THE TIRE MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY IF THE TIRE FAILS. Don't believe me? Call the manufacturers and ask them. Do NOT take the dealer's word for it. And while you're at it, call your insurance company, tell them you're going to put oversize, out-of-spec tires on your rims, and ask them whether your policy will cover an at-fault automobile accident resulting from tire failure.

Never underestimate the power of denial!

They may look like the SSR GT1's, but I seriously doubt the quality is even close or the weight's are close. Good Luck.

And the weights are identical. And even if they only last half as long (which I doubt will be the case), they only cost half as much as the SSRs. I did my math!!

Thanks for your post, but I did my homework. I read about and/or spoke to many, many people on the org that have 235s on their 7" rims without any problems whatsoever. I understand that 225s are the widest tires you SHOULD put on 7" rims. I've been driving for 14 years and have NEVER had a tire blow-out issue. I doubt I will any time soon, even with my oversized tires. The tire shop that put them on told me they do it all the time and have never heard of any problems with a 235 tire on a 7" wheel. And BTW, the Nakayama's don't come in a wheel wider than 7" unless you move up to 18s, which I didn't want. I wouldn't have put them on my car if I really thought I would be endangering anyone, including myself.

I'm glad your good buddies on the forum are giving you their best advice. Unfortunately, I doubt any of them work for a tire manufacturer or an auto insurance company. So I'll issue a challenge to ANYONE running 235/45R17s on 7" wide rims. Dazzle me with your brilliance. Prove to me that a tire manufacturer will stand behind their warranty in the event their tire fails while mounted on a rim with less than the minimum acceptable rim width. And prove to me that your auto insurance company will stand behind their policy if you cause a tire-failure-related accident while running tires that are out of spec for your rims.
Just between you and me, Tony, I don't think anybody will accept my challenge (although I'll be interested to see if any of your friends prove my point about denial as effectively as you have). So you need to ask yourself a question. "Do I feel lucky today?" Well . . . do you?
PS: For those whose lives and the lives of others mean something to them, check out the following article:
http://www.dunloptire.com/tiretech/?...tire_width.txt
I specifically refer you to the discussion under the heading "RIM WIDTH". Notice the words ". . . could result in failure." Then consider this. Who knows more, Tony and his friends or Dunlop?

Well, I don't appreciate your attitude, but I sincerely appreciate the info on that web site you posted. I hope I never have any problems & might have made a different decision on my choice of tires/wheels had I gotten so many negative comments when I did my search on the org. prior to buying them. I will talk to my local tire shop about the above information and see what their opinion is.

Again, I urge you NOT to take the word of your local tire shop in this matter. Contact Bridgestone directly and ask them. If they tell you it's all right for you to mount 235/45R17 RE950s on your 7"-wide rims, then go for it. But if they advise you otherwise, I'd suggest you COMPLETELY DISREGARD any other opinion you receive, including the opinion of your local tire dealer. After all, it's your life that's hanging in the balance.
Good luck!
