rattles and other musings

Hi gang:

I'm new and after searching through old posts, etc., thought I'd add my experiences with my 2k GLE so far. I've had it since Aug. of 2000, and it's been (mostly) a great car. I only have 16k miles on it, so it's not exactly being beaten on. That said, I've had ongoing issues with:

-rattles: the glove box rattles, and both front doors rattle. The glove box rattle has been insolvable by two dealers, who both claim to have followed a TSB to fix it (yeah, I read the rattles TSB already).

-mileage: Ack! It sucks! I've never gotten better than 22 mpg, even feathering the throttle though an entire tank of gas. I think a backwind and God's blessings must be required to get the 27+ mpg I see posted here sometimes.

-paint chips: Clearly I'm not alone on this one. I have 4 coats of Zaino on the car, and each weekend I find new chips in the paint finish. A bird with good aim is also particularly deadly to these finishes.

-wind noise: I get it from the back quarter windows, as most of the rest of you. I'm not going to have the TSB done on this one, as I'm certain it'll come back even more messed up!

-tires: Because I have a GLE, it came with 16" wheels with Toyo tires. ALL FOUR were out of round when I got the car, and had to be replaced by Toyo - nissan refused to have anything to do with this, even though the car is new. Of the four NEW tires, one is still out of round. I've learned to live with it, as Toyo claims that they "only replace tires under warranty once".

Those are the problems. These are the repairs/services I have done to date under warranty:

- replacement of 02 sensors (several at the same time) under a TSB after the SES light came on and stayed on.

- installation of sound deadening insulation around the fan motor (?) because of a clicking sound. The clicking is still there.

Other than normal service, that's it. The car has been great, other than really crappy tires and some annoyances.

Just another data point for anyone keeping track.

Craig

Re: rattles and other musings

This is my experience after 38K miles

-rattles: Bose sub rattles, all the other rattles, I've attacked the source.

-mileage: I get 26mpg mixed driving

-paint chips: no paint chips, but I have tons of small little tiny bumps from sand being thrown from trucks onto the frontal area. Oh well, you can't see if until you get up close, and I mean up CLOSE.

-wind noise: Yeah, I have this issue also, but I've learned to deal with it.

-tires: I thought the Toyo's were fine tires. I still have the originals but I'm replacing them with Khumo's this summer.

You have to admit, this car, or at least mine, has been extremely reliable. With a few rattles and squeaks here, its still a fine car. It has been mechanically reliable, and thats what I feel counts. I can always count on it to get from point A to point B.

I've had the rattling problem as well. I think its in almost every maxima, in mine its on the passenger side window sill, extremly annoying but can be fixed by a few good bangs. My most recent problem is that I know I have to get my oil changed and while I was driving today the SES light came on. So my friend (greg2kgle) was just like zman don't even worry about it, its just telling you that the oil needs to be changed soon, so I was like alright but a few minutes later the engine starts puttering like its about to stall out while I had the gas down. It scared the hell out of me, and I still dont' know what was wrong. I pulled over and the light stayed on, but the puttering stoped. I can't describe it more than a puttering even when i had my foot on the gas, anyone have any idea's what the problem is??

Every car has its rattles. My Bose rattles, nothing I can't handle. The passenger A-pillar rattles over bumps, but that is because during the cold weather things like that happens. It doesn't do it when the weather is warm.

Somebody stop the presses...We, right here on Maxima.org, have unlocked the mystery of why automobiles depreciate in value the moment they are driven off the lot.

Yes, they depreciate, and I'm not expecting perfection. What was your point?

ok

Don't get all defensive and sarcastic on him. If you dont have anything to add to the discussion, leave it.

-rattles: There is an airbag connector that sits on top of the glove box. the wire is not taped and can easily vibrate and make a rattle (assuming you have done the a-pillar fix). Secure the wire for the connector and the glovebox light. Your rattle should be gone.

-mileage: Depends completely on the length of trip. Less than 15 mins, you get 15mpg. simple as that. if you dont see 25mpg on a long trip, maybe you have O2 sensor or coil problems.

-paint chips: I feel for you on this one. been waiting 8 months for the paint inspector, 2nd trip

-wind noise: I just had this TSB done.. It worked and they didnt scratch anything or mess up the seal.

-tires: I have out of round toyos too. shopping for new tires now.

- replacement of 02 sensors - have not had this issue.. cant comment

- installation of sound deadening insulation around the fan motor - yes, I've had this.. motor would be replaced if you took it back. The new motor would last 8 months before ticking again.. ask me how I know? happened like that on both Nissans I have.

I always thought that sound was normal... Its not annoying and loud. My cousins 4th gen does makes this noise also. Oh well...

Is it covered under the powertrain warrenty?

Well, since your post didn't seem to ask for resolution or for any answers but merely point out that you have been unable to fix several problems with you Maxima, I was just pointing out that you may have discovered the reason cars depreciate in value. It wasn't any sort of attack or even statement directed at you specifically.

Tim: I have very few vehicles to express myself, sarcasm is one of my favorites. His post didn't really ask any questions, so I was just PW'ing, I suppose.

After 53,000 miles I haven't had most of the common problems that everyone else has had.

1. No wind noises.
2. No rattles.
3. No problems with original Bridgestones other than the fact that they were almost bald after 35,000 miles.
4. No Bose problems or rattles.
5. No sensor problems.

Although I had the following:

1. 21 mpg average, but I have a heavy foot.
2. Weakest paint I have ever seen.
3. The annoying clicking noise from the AC compressor.
4. The transmission slipping TSB--fixed--for the most part. Still seems to be slipping slightly between 1st & 2nd.
5. Problem with hood latches/struts--Starting at about 60mph, the hood starts "flapping" and looks like it is going to fly off. Dealer adjusted them one time and it fixed it for about 15,000 miles and starting doing it again. Anybody else have this problem?

This car is still the most fun to drive and the best looking car I have ever owned. And after all, you will probably never own a car that doesn't have a few problems here and there.

Just my $.02 worth!

Yes...I didn't realize anything could be done. What do I do, just ask the dealer to adjust the latches?

15,000 miles

-Cold weather brings popping/creaking sounds...but with this LA weather recently it's quieted down.
-Mileage seems about rite...
-No paint chips/scratches (I have some that were my fault). This weekend a black 5th gen was parked next to mine, I wanted to cry looking at the paint lol.
-Wind noise, I have...should get it fixed.

Most importantly though, no mechanical problems (so far).

I just described to the service manager what the hood was doing and they fixed it. I'm not sure what they adjusted. Its got to be something with the latches or struts but I can't see anything on either one that looks like it could be adjusted.
