you start by removing the center vents...
you do this buy pulling up and out... its in their tight... dont worry its not on screws... just get ur thumbs inside the vent(in a place where if u pull u wont break the little adjusting thingies off) and just pull it up and out.. u will hear a snap sound that will be the vent dislocating itself from teh car... now once that is removed u take a flat head screw driver and take a thin peice of cloth and wrap it around the head... and pry up the center console peice that is around the shifter... this whole thing has to come out... once u do that u will have 4 screw exposed... on the bottom and top of the radio/climate control unit... unscrew all the screws u see and pull it out a little.. disconnect the wire harneses in the back and pull the thing out... now u will have some screws on either side of the radio/climate control unit... take these out and u will have the radio and climate control unit separated... now go on and do whatever kinda radio install u wanna do...
good luck

Psing23,
I have tried this over 10times. I still cant get out the damn center vents. I have tried to pull up and out with my index and middle finger grabbing the inside of the vents. That **** just wont budge.
I am tempted to get a screwdriver and cloth and try to get it in from the side, but I know I am going to mess up either the dash or the Bose radio.
There has to be way to get mine out. This one is in there really good. I mean I have pulled so hard that my fingers begin to hurt.

first time...
the first time I took my center vent out (changer cable), I used a paint can opener. you know, they are hooked on one end and have a ring on the other.. I was able to find some plastic I tug on. popped right out.
The second time, that wasnt working. So I got a towel, put it in the side, between vent and dash. I DID NOT pry against the dash. I grabbed the screwdriver at the top and bottom so it wouldnt press against the dash and pulled toward me with the screwdriver. The towel was there so the shaft of the screwdriver wouldnt marr the dash. It popped right out. I dont recommend this method unless you are VERY careful.

Screwed up my dash
I had a GXE, and I bought a stereo install kit from Crutchfield that included the "panel puller tool". I wrapped the thing in electrical tape to prevent it from scratching everything up...but it still didn't work. I stuck the tool at the gap above the vents to remove that section, and it wouldn't BUDGE. Finally came out, but one of the metal clips bent and broke off. Still went in just fine, hasn't rattled or anything.
Worst part? It looks like a squirrel was gnawing at my dash. I'd love to remove the little scratches caused by my $hitty install, but I'm not sure how to repair the soft plastic/vinyl.

I find that using a butter knife works well because of the rounded edges...
You have to start from the bottom. Remove the plastic piece around the shifter, then the ashtray, then you will be able to see the screws under the stereo mount. Then take out the vents with the butter knife and then you will see the other two screws and then you can finally take out the stereo. I did it myself and did not get the squirrel involved...
