Adding your own 8" sub...

My car didn't come w/ the bose sub, I was wondering If the deck lid already has a hole in it or even perhaps perforated so I can rip it open and put a sub in...

Also...

I know about the rattling issues. I'm wondering if I decide not to put in the 8" sub, would there be any benefit or detriment to leaving the hole open? I already have a sealed 12" in the trunk. As it is right now, bass is muffled.

Finally...

Thank goodness for Spring Break... What ever happened to that webpage way back when w/ the sexy Korean woman who made everyone's cats jump? I redid my computer and lost the link... The final effect is similar to the following:

What's wrong w/ this picture?

there's a mount for the bose sub box underneath the rear deck. you could probably use it for your own sub, but i don't think the holes will match up without the nissan enclosure.
you could 'vent' the deck by simply cutting a hole where the stock grill would go, but i don't think that'll help your sound. if there's muffled sound from your 12 then i doubt it's the deck. switch out your amp and see if that helps. you should be able to get good sound. i've got a 10 in my trunk and it sounds fine other than the rattling. i'm planning on finally putting in my dynamat this break to see if that helps.

I have an 8" Kicker sub in an enclosure mounted under the rear deck lid where the bose sub normally goes. My audio dealer cut the rear deck lid and installed new carpeting. Everything's dynamatted. I haven't heard any rattles, but then I don't push the bass that hard.

Hey, thanks fellas.

Cool... I think I'll try switching out the amp.

y2kse, do you have a pic of what your audio dealer did?

No, I'm afraid not. But the installation looks professional. I had it done at Circuit City in Southern California.

yea, i'm kinda curious to see the enclosure myself. i'd love to get rid of this huge box taking up trunk space.

You will have to cut the rear deck, or order a replacement part from somewhere. But the aftermarket sub, may not fit the stock hole (mine didn't). I looked at my friends 2k1, and it is the same insert, but it's not cut. If I where you, I'd just fabricate an insert out of MDF. Get a Jigsaw & cut it to the diameter of the woofer you'll install. It should be more sturdy (the stock plate is crappy) If you're going with the box-in-trunk solution, you can unscrew the insert & (easily?) cut your deck to size & add a grill. This will give you a nice pass-through for the bass.

Good luck,
G
