Security Light

I just picked up my SE on Saturday and I noticed that even when I don't lock all the doors (while she sits in the garage) that the security light continues to blink on and off. Is this normal? I know that the security system is not active.
I remember looking at dozens of Maximas on the lots and even though they were locked...none of them had their security light blinking. What gives?

I have a 2000 SE and the "Security Light" starts blinking as soon as I shut off the engine. Even I have Accessory power on, the light still blinks.

I don't have a factory alarm or anything (I don't think I do, anyway) so the light is just a false indicator to scare people away.

You got me as to why those other cars weren't blinking. Seems to me like they should.

TC, thanks for the quick reply. It doesn't make sense to me either, but I remember looking at new Maximas on the lot and I didn't see the security light blinking. They must enter a code or something when they deliver the car to you (with the key fobs) that sets the system in motion.
BTW, I'm originally from Middletown, CT.

Re: Just keeps blinking on mine...

jjs, thanks...I guess different cars have different methods. The system on my Vette works differently. Oh, well, as long as it draws very little juice and the little red light lasts a long time...I guess it's ok.

LED's take very little power to operate and last a LONG time. No biggie.

If you have a 2k2 from what i've read in the manual. The alarm system will actually turn itself on if left disengaged after a couple of minutes.

Hmm... or was that, after turning it off, not opening doors.. it'll realarm itself. Check the manual, tons of good info there.

Mike, I don't think it works that way, because when I leave the doors unlocked all night, while it's in the garage, and then open the door to the car in the morning...the alarm does not go off.

Mark, my bad. It's the other way around. If your alarm is engaged and you turn it off and not open any window or door, it will realarm itself after a certain time.

Sorry about the confusion.

Mike, now I'm really confused. How do you turn the system completely off? My security light blinks all the time (whether or not I lock the doors with the fob).

i dont think its a false indicator. remember, nissans have the Nissan Vehicle Immobilizer System. the LED is probably related to that since its always armed and ready (if i am not mistaken)

Yeah, you're right... there's that Immobilizer system and it is active as soon as you shut off your car but I don't think the light has anything to do with that system. It just starts blinking as soon as the power is turned off.

I think the light is for scaring people away from breaking into the car, it makes them think that you have an alarm.

It's very possible that the light doesn't start blinking until a fob is programmed in.

I've been to Middletown a few times... it's about 45 minutes from Enfield, I think. How do you like your new Virginia address?

TC, I think you're right, the light is just a "scare tactic."

I been in Va Beach for 22 years retired from the military (served on 5 ships, shore duty, etc.). I do visit Middletown when I can (to see the relatives...I miss the beauty of CT. Went to Xavier H.S., then Trinity in Hartford, and finally Navy OCS). Always good to hear from another "Connectican."

Any reason why you didn't get stationed at Groton? I know they're mostly subs but they have some ships, too. My father is retired Navy submarine guy and he was stationed at Groton.

Ryan, yes, I'm getting up there (late forties)...I was graduated from Trinity back in '76. And now that I think about it, I've been in VA for 25 years (that is a long time!). The SE serves as my "family car." I also have an '01 Vette Coupe (six-speed) as a "weekend warrior." So far, I'm very pleased with the Maxima. It's my first import.

TC, I was a "Blackshoe"/Surface Warfare Officer or otherwise known as a "shipdriver." I spent my career on amphibious ships (3 out of Norfolk,VA and 2 out of Little Creek,VA). In between that, taught at the Amphibious School, attended Staff College, etc. Of course, with over nine major deployments (and not to mention all the little ones in-between), I was never home. The ships in Groton are mainly subtenders, etc. For submariners that would be career enhancing, but not so much for "blackshoes." My dad served in subs during WWII, but then later transferred to the Air Force after the war and retired from the USAF. He always loved the sub duty he had in the Pacific...you really have to have a "taste" for that...ask your dad.
