Factory Alarm Settings

I have a 2K2 with the factory alarm and want to turn off the horn when the car is locked. Is there any way to re-program the alarm?

horn

Page 3-5 & 3-6. Hold the lock and unlock buttons on the key for more than 2 seconds. This toggles between Horn/Hazard Indicator and Hazard Indicator Only. I just confirmed this with my 02SE. One small point is that Nissan did not completely separate the horn and the lights. When in Hazard Indicator only the car will flash twice when armed and will NOT flash when unarmed. It will still unlock the driver's door (or all doors when hit twice). There just won't be any visual confirmation.

if this turns out to be true for everyone, couldnt you get around that by disconnecting the horn from the alarm physically? eh now that i think about it, if you do that then the horn wont sound if someone opens the doors when the alarm is armed. but i guess this is an option for people who plan to get an aftermarket alarm with a siren.

I would have preferred keeping the visual confirmation. I can live without it though; you can still here the locks open. You can also argue that not flashing the lights will make the bulbs last longer. I'm guessing that Nissan did this to make sure they didn't get too many cases of people claiming the horn weren't beeping.

I did find the section in the manual concerning possible problems with other keys and other things (something about some kind of automatic doors, etc.) a little disconcerting. I would suggest the 02 owners read up on that keyless entry system.

Yeah, the lights don't flash when you unlock the door but the interior light does come on so you do get a visual at night. You'll have to listen during the day.
