What's your sound system?

I have a Pioneer DEH-P5200 head unit with a 12 disc cd changer, stock (Clarion) speakers, and an Infinity Basslink in the trunk. I have no tweeters.

I test drove 2002 with the Bose system and I swear it could not match my system for overall volume or bass. Not knocking the system, it is good. I was just suprised that the stock speakers put out such a good sound with the 45x4 watt head unit.

Also, the Infinity Basslink (a self amplified 10" sub) gives remarkable performance without the need for dynamat. Only my license plate rattles, which I didn't do anything about b/c I think it's kinda funny.

The only other upgrade I have considered is a 4-channel amp for my speakers. But it is rare that I am craving mas volume. Although it might be a good excuse to blow my speakers out, forcing me to get some Kappas.

I'd be interested to hear what other .orgers(?) have ruining their hearing.

Infinity Ref's all around on stock headunit. And...

some Basslink loving! Until i actually heard it inside the Max i was turned off by it's lack of punch and definition on the store shelf. But once installed, for the price you can't go wrong.

where do you have yours placed? mine's on the left side of the trunk

Left side also, but floor mounted on three of four bolts to allow access to spare. The cardboard cover actually slides under one leg, but it is still a solid mount.

Sound system?? A nice, curvy, smooth

back-country blacktop, sunroof open, enough structures on both sides to reflect sound back into the car, snick-snick shifing and the engine humming between 3 and 5k rpms.
Who needs a sound system?

Well back in 96 when I was working at Ultimate Electronics in Boulder, CO (we call it Soundtrack here, not UE) I had a nice employee priced system, I'll do my best to convey what I had...

Alpine CDA-7930 CD deck, 3 RCA Preouts, no deck power at all, ultra clean sound
Alpine DDC-F17A Front and Rear Seperates, I loved the sound these made, still have one pair of em somewhere
SoundStream SS10R Limited subs x1 pair. For those that remember these subs, computer matched subs down to 0.00000001% tolerance from each other. They are a completely matched pair of subs and produced just incredible sound. I miss these subs bad, not for all out SPL, but for sound quality and man did they do it *sniff*
SoundStream Reference 644s 75x4 RMS amp
SoundStream Reference 1000s running 250 to each sub RMS
2x 1 Farad Cap's
All the cable you care to buy, yada yada yada, custom labor, box, etc...

Installed in a 1991 Ford Taurus SHO 5spd of course

Well, sad to say these subs got damaged on my trip to Oklahoma when I moved there, and ended up having to switch to 4x Exact 10's as thats what was out at that time when they died and the SS10R Ltd's were no longer made.

So then I went to the Exact 10's x4 and ended up taking 2 out b/c it was too loud and I did not like the result, but with 2 10's they were just fine again and all was happy.

I'll let you know later what happens with whatever Maxima I end up getting.

Duane

Re: What's your sound system?

I have exactly the same factory setup as you do...no tweeters. I have Clarion ADX 5655z H/U and Wolfenhag 500w amp run 2x10" MTX in a big bandpass box. I plan on getting maybe a 250-300w 4-channel amp for speakers, and put some 6.5 components up front and 6.5 2-ways in the back.

Then I'd like to change my bass setup by converting to more efficient MTX woofers and a more lightweight enclosure.

When you say "component" are you talking about speakers w/ crossovers to mount aftermarket tweeters?

Wouldn't 2 or 3-way speakers sound and look better up from?

Lastly, is it easy to install 6 1/2" speakers in our 6 3/4" mounts?

Anybody field these questions.

I would assume that's a yes. AFAIK, that's the only description for it when it comes to main speakers (e.g. not subs). However, in 99% of the time they're all sold as a set (ex: 6.5", 1", crossover)

Wouldn't 2 or 3-way speakers sound and look better up from?
That would be subjective. I like components more because i can set the soundstage however way i like. Having the tweeters in a higher location is better to my ears. Others put both the tweets and the mids in one enclosure thus negating the advantage of having separates. As far as looks go, that too is subjective. I just put my aftermarket comps in the stock locations.

Additionally, some like having Comps up front and a sub in the back. (Concert hall sound), others like having an additional set of speakers in the back (Surround sound).

Lastly, is it easy to install 6 1/2" speakers in our 6 3/4" mounts?
As long as you have the brackets, no problem. It's fairly easy. If anything the hardest part would probably be taking out the door panels inorder to get to the speakers itself.

Re: Re: Re: Re: What's your sound system?

Thanks for the insight.

On the question of which were better looking: My 01 came with stock radio and no tweeters, so I have no place to mount them other than the surface of the a-pillar. I guess if I was ritchie-rich I could just get the a-pillar with tweeter housing (or not).
