Has anyone noticed that their Mobil one oil turns dark quick, like around 1000-2000 miles? Is dark oil okay, or is it a sign that it should be changed? How long do most of you go before changing Mobil 1?
Thanks

yeup

I noticed this too with the Mobil 1 that I have in my car. Actually, before my 30K oil change, I have used mobil regular motor oil. But I decided that it'd be best to just move to mobil 1 synthetic and just change my oil less---and have better protection for my engine. I am only about 1000 miles into this recent oil change and I noticed that around 600 miles the oil got dark--quicker than the non-synthetic stuff. I am assuming that it is okay, since Mobil can go for 7500 (with test results) before an oil change.

=)

Yikes! I notice that too.

My oil has about 1500 miles on it. It's fairly dark, but color is no indication of the condition of your oil. So I'm not worried. I might send my oil for diagnosis at my next oil change to make sure everything is okay.

know that we are on the subject

I have noticed that the MObil 1 5w30 synthetic get darker/blacker very quickly(3k). Doesn't it meant that it is time to change the oil?

ANyway i just changed my oil, every 3k miles, do you think it is overkill? should i save money and run it to 7k-7.5k?
Just want opinions and stuff.
It was very dark at 3k , imagine at 7.5k!!

$20K+ car.... $20 oil change... your call

My dealer charges $20, with fluid inspection + complimentary windshield wiper fluid :-)

+ they have me in and out in about 20 min (assuming you don't go there on a saturday)

If you ask me, there's NO REASON why one can't change their oil every 3,000-4,000 miles.. Especially if you BOUGHT the car..!!

No reason at all. But I suggest you change your tires when they are only 50% worn also. Same thing.

Shing

Where the heck is Shing? Feel like his world wisdom on mobil 1 synthetic oil changes is needed here.

btw, the 5w30 is getting dark--but perhaps that is of their composition which differs than regular oil.

Shingles--where are you!!!

I've noticed that the oil does tend to get dark rather quickly.. but I don't think its losing its viscosity any sooner than normal.. I've seen it go as far as 7k and still be somewhat functional..

I am really surprised no one knows why Mobil 1 comes out darker! The reason being it has a cleaning agent in there and helps keep the inside of your engine cleaner! It works unlike regular oils! That is a good thing!

Is it... To me it doesn't sound very obvious that particles floating around in motor oil are better than particles stuck to engine parts.. (which is the worse of two evils?)

I dunno... I am no expert....
