Track Times 4/17/02 02 GLE

Well I went to the track last nite. (Union Grove, WI) The track was in good shape and offered good bite but....my times are not impressive to say the least. I made a total of 29 runs! The temps was around 85 on my 1st run and my take was 3/4 full in daily driver trim. My 1st run was my worst 15.512 @ 90.09 (6:15pm and still very warm) but had the best 60ft time of 2.311. My best run came @ 8:36pm and the temp was in the 60's....15.162 @ 91.55 with a 2.349 60ft. My best rt was a smokin .509 on a .500 tree. and my best speed was 92.01 @ 9:27 pm. I only have about 1975 miles and hope that it breaks in better. Hope Don's vb helps my shifts. I will figure my averages later and edit.
Thanks -- SS

The GLE's an auto, right? And no semi-manual mode, either.

Do you brake-torque on launch, or just hammer it on the last yellow?

Well i was getting better times than that when my car had 1,000 miles on it. Now I get about 14.80 1/4's @ 94.02 mph stock. Each car comes from the factory different although, I and a few others have strong ones and others not so strong on here.

I don't agree. Different tracks, different days, and different conditions make a huge difference. Low 15s in a stock 2k2 auto is very normal if you ask me. Very few have broken into the 14s with their stock 2k2 autos.

nice run!! I went to union grove WI last year, all stock and ran a 15.1 also. Weather was around 70 when i ran.. so we got almost the same times. Your reaction rocks!!!! Congrats!

Is there a weight difference between the GLE and the 5 speed SE?

Slight brake torque @ about 1000/1500rpm. It really did not matter if I hit it @ 2500 90% my 60ft times were in the 2.35 range. I did not want to brake torque it to long and heat the trans so I tried to bring the r's up once I saw the 1st yellow. Out of all my runs I was only beat @ the tree 3 times with only 1 red light! I smoked BMW Z3, and Lexus IS300 pretty bad but was beat by a CRX with only a intake/exhaust but he was totally stripped and weighted about 1500lbs with 165hp!

I think the main ingredient here is the Temp. 80 degrees is NOT an ideal drag racing temperature ! I have a suggestion for all my forum friends.. We used to do it at the track with our Stangs all the time, and it WORKS ! Take a large cooler with Ice. Take some freezer bags... In between each run. Fill the bags with ice, pop the hood, and ICE DOWN the intake ! Remove that cover when you go to the track. This will keep your car cooler between runs. 29 runs is TOO MUCH in my opinion for one night. I am looking for a track to go to here in Southern Cal... I will not go to Carlsbad which is 15 minutes from me because it STINKS ! Any suggestions anyone. Your GLE has slimmer tires than an SE. You should get into the 14's soon !

Those times are pretty good....dont worry about it! Just practice. Kloogy gave some good advice though. Take off all the plastic engine cover stuff....it holds the heat in...very bad. Also, remove the spare tires and inner trunk stuff as well as all your loose interior junk. Lower your tires to around 25psi (increases traction) and keep your rear at stock or higher pressure, that way they want contribute as much drag. Also, the ice trick does wonders. ICE DOWN THAT INTAKE MANIFOLD BETWEEN RUNS!!!!!!! I cannot say that enough! With all that and some practice you'll hit 2.2 60fts and 14.8 to 14.9 1/4s.

Right with ya guys.
Had the cover off...puttin back on this am.
thought of the ice thing (a former stang owner 87 LX 5sp stk went 14.49 with 2.73 gears) but forgot it. I basically wanted to see what it would do in the trim that I drive it. Heck my times were the almost the same with my a/c on. I had my tires set at 24psi and honestly it did not help (my last run was @ 32psi and was a 15.21 which was one of my best).

Yeh, Icing down the intake is a must before each run! Also run the engine as little as possible in the staging area.

I had a couple of mustang's myself, 86' SVO and 92' GT w/ 3.73 gear.... And one thing that worked for me (especially on the SVO) was (and I know I'm gonna gets some laughs from this!) to throw a bottle of 'Octane 104' (octane boost). Lot of people will tell you it doesn't work, but I had times w/ and w/out to prove it does. Although I don't know how much it would help in a new Max w/out adjusting the timing. Probably not much. 'Traction' is everything.

I have an '02 SE Auto. 85 degrees and sunny. Went 15.102 @ 91.25. 1150 miles on the clock. 60' time of 2.2x (upper 2.20's, of course).

SS - Do you experience any slipping of the trans when it is cold? I think that I could pick up a tenth, maybe two if my trans didn't lollygag during the two shifts. I posted my times and experience on an older post but no one speculated on the trans issue. When the trans is warmed up (not the engine, but the trans) it shifts fine. But when I first drive it, for about 3-4 minutes, it's slips. Even in the staging lanes, when the engine temp is normal, I ASSume the trans is cold, because during my runs, it slips. Now if I got 29 runs in, it would be fine.

Maybe anyone else with an '02 Auto can chime in.....

By the #'s you posted sounds like we may be a faily close match up! (not related but I dang proud of only being beat @ the tree a total of 4 times all night with only 1 red light, pretty good % rating if I say so myself!)
Well I can only say that my trans (noted 1st day) does not engauge into gear but (my best anology) shiiiifffts into gear hot or cold that is why I sent my $$$$$ to Don for his vb mod and hope he gets it to me very SOOON as I hate that part of the car!

Not to sound like a dork, but isn't 29 WOT runs in just a few short hours really ****ing hard on a car? I mean, we wonder why the auto's(on cars in general) don't last yet we put them through so much. 29 runs on just one day in the life of the car.

I did not beat the trans off the line as I did not wish to "heat" the fluid ect. The most I brought the r's upto was approx 1500 off for a VERY short time during a brake torque. I am pretty hard on my vehicles that's why I maintain them VERY well. When my vb gets hear I plan a trans fluid flush and then will do one about every 12 to 15k after that. Having been @ a Chrysler store for a couple of yrs I found that vehicles with weak trans's benefit greatly from frequent fluid services.

Not bad times...I would recommend going to Route 66. GLDW seems to have traction problems even with the new surface. My brother went there last week and only got one run there. I am suprised you got so many runs in.
