Weird noise when I brake or make a turn.

About three days ago i installed Hawk Performance brakes and had the rotors resurface. The mechanic told me that the rotors were warped, but anyway, i installed the brakes and it still makes this weird noise. It sounds like that noise that buses or big rigs make when they brake. Like a grinding metal noise. Oddly enough it also makes this noise when ever I make a turn, without braking though. I did clean the rotors after they were resurfaced and put the metal things that were attached to the back of the stock pads. One thing that i forgot to mention, is that the new brake pads had this metal piece behind them, sort of like the ones that come out from behind the stock pads. The whole reason behind changing brake pads was so that i would get rid of the annoying sound.

Did you remember to re-install the seperator spring? (looks like a wishbone piece of wire). Without the spring, the brakes will squeal.

You need new rotors.... If you still have warranty left, go get it replaced.. Otherwise pay phuong(eatricezone.com) a visit.. He had some decent prices on Stillen rotors...

Did you use anti-squeal stuff on your pads?

I will have to double check on that. i'll check and take a pic cause I think I may have miss that part. but thing is it made that noise before I installed the new pads.

I use Permatex anti-seize... which also can be used on spark plugs, exhaust bolt, nuts, etc.

Thanks for the advice. If I can't find a solution then I will have to consider getting new rotors. As of now the brakes are making the same noise and in addition a loud squeling noise. GEEZ what a pain. How do I know that the rotors are warped? i am thinking that it is possible for them to be warped again even though I resurfaced them. Also how can air get into the brake lines and the fluid. How do i know when it is time to change the brake fluid and is there a write-up on this? This question goes out to anyone that might know the answer. Thanks again to all of you how have responded to this thread.

Rotors being warped usually wouldn't cause squealing sounds...but when you brake, the steering wheel will seem to vibrate. Re-surfacing the rotor is just to get rig of anything that has bonded on the rotor surface. Most of the time, if the rotor is warped significantly, you will have to re-cut it. They are two different processes.

As for air in the brake lines, you will know because you will have to stomp on the brake pedal all the way before the car will stop, and if there is enough air in the lines, you might not stop at all! And thus it is very important to bleed your brake lines if you ever work on them yourself.

I'd also check how your rear pads installed. Our rear pistons have special grooves in them and pads in turn have pins which MUST fit in those grooves. If not, they'll touch rotor with some angle, cause uneven wear and all sort of noises. Some aftermarket pads don't have those pins so I'm not sure if this is the case. In any case sounds like poor assembly job for me - take care of it ASAP.

Mike.
