Timing chain rattle
Timing chain rattle
Just changed the oil on my car for the first time on the weekend, f*ck*ng oil filter! After I fought with that for a while and finally won, I had my wife back the car out of the garage and got up close exposure to the dreaded timing chain rattle. I had heard it before but it was very rare and over noise of the stereo.
After searching the org I verified what the noice was. So what has NNA said about it? I heard that there is a TSB in Canada about the issue, what does Nissan Canada say in the TSB? Thanks.

Jaws, I'm planning on doing my oil change in several weeks (have about 560 miles right now). I went to the dealer and he showed me the exact oil filter pliers he uses to take off the filter. They're about 12 inches in length and bent at a 20 degree angle at the head and easily slip up around the filter while pushing the splash shield slightly out of the way. So, I went ahead and bought the same pliers (through the Tool Warehouse online). Hopefully they will be able to get the factory filter off. Also, I'm sure there was a little mess (from the oil dripping into the splash shield once the filter is off), any problems with cleaning that up. Also, I plan on just "hand tightening" the new oil filter. I made a "dry run" and found that by driving up on homemade wooden ramps (which I use for my other cars) that I was able to reach the oil filter and drain plug easier going in from the front of the passenger tire (and being under the right portion of the fascia). Any other hints?
I am not aware of this timing chain TSB.

Jaws, roger that. When I back up out of my garage there is already a slight drop towards the street...so with my ramps that should be enough to allow for a good drain.
When you removed the drain plug did you replace the copper ring with a new one? When I was at the dealer they gave me about four new copper crush rings along with two new oil filters.
BTW, the dealer gave me filters which have 15208-65F00 on them, but I thought I saw another poster who said that when he removed his factory oil filter that it had 15208-65F01 on it. What did you use?

My timing chain has only rattled once, and that was after I let my car sit for about a week without starting it up. It was also during the wintertime . . . although I wouldn't call winters very severe here in Los Angeles.
I wouldn't concern myself about timing chain rattle too much unless it's happening with some regularity. It if is, I'd take it to your dealer and let him check it out.

Sandman, a lot of mechanics will tell you that you should probably change your factory oil within the first 1000 miles since it will contain a lot metal debris which can easily make your filter not work efficiently.

Take BMW and Audi as examples. The first scheduled oil changes are required at 12-15,000 and 10,000 miles, respectively.
To change your oil twice at 2,000 miles, while providing peace of mind, is basically wasting money. And, to be honest, you may be adversely affecting the break-in, since the motor needs a certain degree of friction to properly seat all the components.

I know what that timing chain rattle sounds like, Sandman2K. And if you ever hear it in your engine, you'll be up here complaining about it so fast it will make our heads spin.

To top it off I used Mobil 1 oil in both motor and tranny, is that extreme too????? I have had not one peep of any rattles in the motor either.

Sandman, after the first change of the factory oil (early on) I will then probably change it every 3K miles or 4 months.
I have already changed the synthetic oil (Mobil One) in my '01 Vette twice in the last year (eventhough my mileage for last year was 3.6K miles). I did the same for my '94 Vette. I changed the factory oil at 800 miles in each of them for the first time and then whenever six months would go by...regardless of the mileage. It may be a bit extreme, but to me it's cheap insurance.

I know it seems contradictory, but in many new engines, changing the oil too soon will ADVERSELY affect the break-in of the engine.
To think you used Mobil 1 (I assume it was prior to the new Tri-Synthetic SL designation) twice in 2k miles means you've effectively minimized the internal friction within the engine during the break-in. According to current information, this is detrimental to conditioning the seals properly and allowing components to "seat" correctly.
And, as a logical extension, why would the car companies (who are essentially in bed with the oil corps) recommend higher oil-change intervals on newer cars?
To perform more engine repairs under warranty due to neglect? I think not.
If they suggest certain mileage figures, it's because they've done RESEARCH indicating that it's not necessary.
But hey, it's your car.

So your saying if you were in the market for a used maxima, you would buy the one that someone went higher mileage between oil changes than the person that changed often. That makes sense... I never knew that changing you oil sooner than reccommended would screw up your car.... Wow, I guess you learn something everyday. But I am still going to change my oil sooner. When my car starts making noises and breaks down, I call you so you can laugh. Oh by the way in your other reply, you were saying to go 15K between oil in BMW's, I guess everyone with with a BMW would get there asses kicked if they raced you cuz their car will break due to frequent oil changes..... Heck I am going to start draing the oil out of my lawn mower and using it in my Maxima, or maybe just mix it with some metal fillings....

Can anyone decipher this for me?
In an attempt to respond, I would be more wary of someone who changed their oil every 1,000 miles rather than the normally-accepted mileage figure. I'd think the guy beat on his car regularly and assumed that changing the oil would somehow lessen the abuse.
As far as the 15k interval for a BMW, that's straight from the factory, kid. Yeah, the same BMW whose inline-6's are the benchmark for engines around the world. And they request that the work be done at BMW dealerships so individuals are less tempted to do what they "think" is right rather than what BMW KNOWS is correct.
BTW, I never buy used cars. Yes, there is depreciation involved, but at least you know that your hands are the only ones to have touched the car.

Yeah you'll be alright when the smoke clears. First off I dont change the oil every 1000 miles, only in the breakin... I did one at 500mi, and the other at 2000mi with the tranny also at 2000mi. Now I will go every 3000mi. Yeah and whatever the dealer/manufacturer says is normal I believe them.... Cuz they know... Why dont oil manufacturers sell used oil then if it so much better. I guess I will switch from Mobil 1 oil to some cheap generic 89 cent/quart oil.... I really dont know how my other car, a Pontiac and chevy lasted 150K and 200K, and still going with my theory of changing fluids. Your probably one of those people that never flush brake fluid and Power steering fluid either..... CHEAP ***** !!!!
