This is a really stupid question, but will the UPS counter workers look at me like I am insane if I just tape the shipping sticker to the tire with no box? I can't see the purpose in boxing a tire. Have any of you shipped tires before? Box or no box?

I don't think you're insane... I have seen many a tire shipped before, unboxed. I wouldn't just stick the label on it though... don't know if it'd stay on... I'd tie a tag around the tire with some wire or cord.

And then... don't know UPS's rules... could be your tire won't be insured if it's not boxed.

Sold my SE wheels to an org member about six months ago. UPS WILL NOT ALLOW shipment of tires like that. Again, UPS NOT ALLOW shipment of tires like that. I used a piece of cardboard around the sides and use lots of clear tape(industrial strength) and they demande that I buy boxes from them amd use them to ship the tires. I beleive that I have received tire through FEDEX like that though. You might want to check them out.

there's a $5 additional handling fee if shipped unboxed. Other than that, they have no problems shipping it w/o a box but if it gets damaged you will not be reimbursed, if insured.

Since I am a Contractor for FEDEX GRound, Yes you can ship tires by just taping the tracking label and address label to them. Sometimes you might get hit with an "incompatible pkge. " charge, but if you just take them to any fedex facility , they can be shipped. Wheels are a different story. This applies for FEDEX GROUND shipments .

Isn't Fed Ex ground a ton more than UPS?

No, pricing is generally within $1-2. I use to use Fed Ex but switched to UPS because I didn't like my Fed Ex driver. He took his time bringing in/taking out shipments. The UPS guy is in/out within 5-20 seconds (depending on weight of boxes) whereas the Fed Ex guy takes 2-3 minutes, even if it's a 4 pound box with one brake pad in it. Plus the Fed Ex guy drops off /picks up at various times throughout the day. The UPS guy is there every day within 10-20 minutes of the normal time. 9:30 am drop, 3pm pickup.
