I have the 2000 SE 16 rims and actually like them. I want to upgrade my tires but would like to go with a wider tire if possible. Does going from 215 55 16 to 225 55 16 make any sense? It would only effect the speedo slightly but might look and handle a lot better. While its all a matter of money, I see more wheel "upgrades" that look like crap than ones that look better....or maybe I like my nimble five spokes!

I wouldn't think a 225 would look better. It's going to make your tires look fat and squishy. I'd stick with the 215. Actually, I'd sell the 16's and buy some 18's...but that's just me.

...Go up 1 inch, and get 17inch x 8inch Mille Miglia Evo 5 wheels, with 225/50r17... That is the stock tire size of the 2002 SE, and the 17x8 can handle that perfectly. The Evo is a great wheel with a very similar 5-spoke design to the one you have on your 16"... Check them out at tirerak.com... But no you should NOT put 225 width tires on your stock 16" wheels... Dangerous.

I don't have my owner's manual handy. Its not the rotational or circumference difference because that is less than two percent from 215-55 to 225-55 on the same size wheel. Is the stock 16x6.5? That would still be too small for a 225. You have to forgive me I don't run those wheels, I run 225/50r17 on the 17x7 stock SE 2002's...

Good guess, Matthew. The stock rim size for the 16" rim is located on page 10-9 of your owners manual. And it's 6.5" wide. Now which tire manufacturer says it's not OK to mount their 225/55R16 tire on a 6.5" rim?

has been running 225/50s on factory 98 SE rims for almost year and half now with no prblems.

Stock is 215, so I don't think going 10 milimiter wider will cause any problems.

are the 5th gen. SE 16s 6.5inch wide as well?

...Probably most manufacturers would recommend against that, the sizing and load charts on different brands are pretty consistent with what they recommend.

All right, you guys, here we go again.

Selecting tires and rims is not something anyone should undertake until they have all the FACTS! And right now, that's something both you and asu174 are missing. If you don't have the facts, get them. They aren't that hard to find.

It's perfectly fine to run most 225/55R16 tires on the OEM rims. If anything, they have a HIGHER load rating than the 215/55R16 tires, so they're safer from that aspect. The minimum acceptable rim width for the 225/55R16 tire is 6.0", so you're OK there as well. And the difference in overall diameter between the 215/55R16 and 225/55R16 is only 1.7%, well within the 3.0% guideline.

Damn. Don't you hate someone who actually takes the time to do the research?

Personally, I am not myself doing a wheel and tire upgrade. I was just trying to lend a helping hand... But if you say 16x6 is safe for 225's, I take your word for it. It might not LOOK as nice as a 225 on a 7 or 8 inch wide wheel, but to each his own... Personally if I were upgrading here is my dream setup with my new Maxspeeds which are on the way. I know it is a little heavy but here goes:

18x8 Mille Miglia Evo 5
245/40r18 Yokohama AVS dB Ultra Performance ZR speed

...and a partridge in a pear treeeeeee...

I just put on 225/55 R16 BFG G Forces from the TireRack on the GLE. As mentioned before, the 225/55 are within the 3% rule on the 6.5" rim that y2kse spoke about before. I talked it over with Larry at TireRack as well.

They don't look quite as nice as I would like, but the slightly taller tire fills the wheel gap better than the 215/55. I wish the five spoke stock 16s were 16x7 instead of the 16x6.5.

Tirerack has the BFG g Force for $101 a tire and a W rating. Anything is better than the stock Toyos; they suck.
