Smoked by a Z3 3.0i- Because I have Cali spec?

I'm on the SR51 on-ramp at Colter with a slice of pizza hanging out of my mouth when I see this silver Z3 coming up right on my tail. The lanes are merging together but instead of slowing down, this yahoo squeezes by me on the right side, narrowly scraping the retaining wall and forcing me to swerve to the left. I throw my piece of pizza down in a fit of rage and jam it in second. I finally catch up to this guy, only because of traffic ahead, he sees me, looks in his rear view, grins, and floors it.......gone. I ran each gear up to 55K, but never had a chance.

I have no mods yet, but the Z3 is a friggin chick car. As I type this e-mail I am softly sobbing at my desk wondering how some middle aged homo in a Ralph Lauren hat smoked me. How much HP does he have? There is no way this old fart had mods. he was probably jamming to his Mamas and Papas disc....

I can't find this in the owners manual, and I know Y2KSE will yell at me for not doing a search, but how much horsepower comes stock on Cali Spec 2000 Max SE? It isn't 222hp, is it?? I was told otherwise..... Help!

My Y pipe and intake are in at the end of the week...I hope I see that bastard again.

People try crap like that on me all the time at that on-ramp. Fockers!!! But I don't eat pizza in my car so they can't get away with it!!

The Z3 3.0i is pretty quick (6.0-6.3 in the 0-60). With a good launch I think one could take a 2k2 6spd so I wouldn't worry about it.

222hp even though I'm Cali spec? The guy at Southwest Autoworks told me that I'm at around 200 and that I should shoot myself in the kneecap for buying a Cali spec.

I got just a K&N cone filter intake and the Stillen Y Pipe..... I was told not to get a full on intake system because we are in Arizona... Same with the cold air intake....apparently worthless.....

And if I'm wrong, don't yell at me... I don't know my head from my ***... I just know I got killed by some guy my dad probably hangs out with.

Who ever told you that is pretty dumb. From what i know all car sold in the U.S come with cali spec emissions if that is what you are reffering to.

I think we are too heavy for Z3....esp the 3.0. If u have an S2000....that would be a different story.

I assume he told you that because of the heat??? I had an intake on my last car and I still got the same 5-10hp gain (dyno proven) that everyone else got. Yeah, so it's 110 in the summer... that's still a helluva lot cooler than the air right around your engine.

Note to self.... don't talk to anyone at Southwest Autoworks!!

Z3 with 3.0 liter is 225hp, 300 lbs less weight
and much shorter gearing...no way you gonna hang with him.
Z3 M-coupes have 315 hp and do 0-60 in 5.2 to 5.4 seconds, even bigger blow-out.

In 2000 there was a Cali and Fed spec. Maxima. He was telling him, since he bought a 2000, that he should have looked for a 2000 FED spec..

All 2001-2K2 Maximas are Cali spec..

He meant 200hp to the wheels. Not sure why he would have told you NOT to get a CAI.

You have huge heavy rims and a system?
You have no mods!
Did you redline each gear? You said you brought it up to 55k??? Guy you got bring it up to 66K/67K (right before fuel cut) to get the power out of your particular car 2k and 2k1 5spds.
He should beat you easily under all these circumstances so no worries. Next time redline each gear, get some light rims, intake/y-pipe that will get you started if you really want to race around in your Maxima.

You're kidding
right? The Z3 3.0i has the same HP as your 00 (225 HP) but weighs about 320 lbs less. So even if he had somebody heavy in his car, he'd have likely taken you.

Personally I like the Z3. They handle extremely well and are a lot of fun to drive. If I thought I could have gotten away with a 2 seater I would not have hesitated (I would have kept my 89SE as well).

Whatever redline is, I did it... I thought it started at 5500....maybe I brought it up to 6500.... Also, my rims are not the ones pictured. those are "in the shop" (long story). I have the stock SE 17" rims right now. And racing pedals....I thought those would help....guess not......

I am also about to buy a Hayane exhaust....anybody know anything about these?

Mine is definitely different than Fed. I couldn't install my intake last night because the fed adapter wouldn't fit....

If yours is a Cali-spec, I believe there's a how-to for converting it to Fed-spec that was actually pioneered by one of the AZ guys. Might be worth looking into if it's not a huge PITA.

Ahhh, that's who it was. I didn't see any dyno results and his page didn't work, so I'm curious as to how it turned out and if it was worth the effort and $$$. I have a Fed-spec, but I'm curious nonetheless.

I was going to repeat that, but I figured it would start some flames.

Anyways, his dyno yielded minimal PEAK gains, but low-end/mid-range might have been improved. I don't remember exactly. The culprit is that he was still running a CALI spec ECU, so inorder to gain the theoretical 10ft-lbs. torque the FED spec has over the CALI spec, you would need to swap to a FED spec ECU. This hasn't been done.

The MAJOR plus of doing the CALI-to-FED conversion is that you eliminate BOTH precats, which means less chance of remaining cat failing due to mods AND theoretically the exhaust flow would be BALANCED which should aide long term engine life.

Here is his webpage with some pics:

This is golden, no offence, but you don't even know the redline on your Max.... Man, this is what you really need to do to beat him... Throw your keys out the window, go down to Wal-Mart, buy a baseball bat and repeatedly beat yourself over the head with it.... Hey, if ya can't beat em, might as well join em...

Okay, I've gotta ask...where are these open stretches of highway that allow you to go 142? Are you really on jack stands or something?

My all time high is 130 and I shut it down instantly- coming back from San Diego. Also, for you Arizonans- Queen Creek road off I-10....That road is a dead straightaway, but I'm not nuts enough to get it up to 140.....
