To all 2000 owners with paint and glass problems

Although it may seem a bit late, my car has 27K mi on it now, but I've been playing hide and catch with Nissan and my dealer to arrange the paint inspection. Next mod: paint inspection by Nissan, within next 2-3 weeks.

Please post the month your car was made, when was the first time you noticed a problem. If you brought this up to your Nissan dealer-what exactly you were told, and what was done. Also, how satisfied are you with the outcome.

I need to be able to prove that my car is not the only one out there, so I may have to show this thread to a rep of Nissan Consumer Affairs. Thank you.

went when car was new..

waited 2 months for inspector, there are VERY busy you know

small scratches *under* the clear, appearently the painting robot was dragging a hose or something :/ gave me $400 claim to paint hood and fenders. But every reputable place will charge $400 per panel, closest quote I got for a quality front end repaint was $1000. Wasnt enough $$$ to repaint the car, I argued this. And was upset that I'd have a brand new repainted car. I got nowhere with this. They simply didnt care

The scratches werent that bad and you cant really seem them unless you look for them, after much argueing the regional rep offered me some service credits, like the 30K service. I took that over a repaint.

Now I have clear coming up over the rear wheel arch. I've waited 6 months!!!!!!!! to see the inspector. I guess they are REALLY busy these days.

bought my max (leased actually) in august of '01, made I believe June or May of '01 or within the past 6 months prior to August... had a few minor scratches on delivery and some remaining transport tape, they took care of it.

A few weeks later I read about the paint problem and since I do a LOT of highway driving I went out to look, and sure enough there were some small scratches, etc... I really haven't said much because it doesn't look horrible... yet, and I don't want to go through the hassle of the dealer etc... and nothing will probably get done anyway... maybe I'll have them take a look next time I'm in there for an oil change. They've always treated me well. (spent a crapload of money repairing my last car with them ['96 altima])

I'll let ya know what happens next month when I take it in...

Hey admins - where the link to the original thread on this? It's probably more than 300 posts long. We shouldn't have to recreate this.

My car was involved in a high speed sand storm and chipped my windshield and hood and bumper. My insurance covered my windshield and paint, so I did the unthinkable and smashed my own windshield, got a new one, and then a minor accident that ripped up the right side of my car, I just stripped all the paint off redid whatever I could to fix minor dings, and shot the car BMW Jet Black, after completion, 1500 wet sand, polish, wax and hand glaze. My paint is deep deep glossy black, 1000X better than stock.
New motor by next week, new tranny to boot too.
72K miles, since 9/99 and still going.

Look, if you don't like it-dont read it. The purpose of my post is to see if there're remaining 2000 Maxima owners (many have traded in), to see how they have coped with the problem. Like someone said, it is a pain to schedule a paint inspection. My Nissan dealer kept putting it off because of "bad weather" until I gave up. Now they have a totally new service dept and I want to see where this will go.

Now please, only 2000 model year Maxima owners, just drop a line ot two where you are right now w/problem 2 yrs later. I really hope to give link to this post to the person @ Nissan Consumer Affairs to look at what do their customers think of this issue . Thank you.

I'm not trying to dodge this thread - I'm just saying that there already is a ton of data on this topic in the board in another thread and, like you, have the same problem and would like to see someone, anyone get Nissan to pony up and fix our cars.

As for my case. Tons of paint chips in less than 20k of driving, went to dealer (this was last October), they took pictures and scheduled a visit with regional Nissan rep. He came several days later, took a few more pictures. He didn't ask me anything and basically ignored me. Nissan dealer said they would get back to me within a day or two. Nothing. I called them several days later to have them tell me basically "tough ****, it's your problem. You don't like it, then take it up with Nissan directly." Called Nissan Customer Service and opened a case. (#3548415) Again, no support, no resolution. To this day and now at 39K miles I have a car with a hood that looks like it has salt sprikled all over the first 2 feet. I am NOT an aggressive driver that tailgates. I drove an Integra for 10 years on the same roads and the same way and the front end on that car looked better at 120K miles than my Max did at 20K miles.

2000 SE, Grey Lustre, 33,000 miles. Front end has at least 50 paint chips. Previous car, 87 CRX-Si, 154,000 miles when I sold it, maybe 3 chips total.

NISSAN PAINT SUCKS!

Did you sign the complaint form?

Did you all sign the form? http://www.nissanpaint.com Scroll down a bit for the Maxima link. I have a 2000 Black SE and it has loads of chips on the hood and front bumper. But I bought my car used with 30,600 mi on it. for $18,900. I didn't really notice all the chips until after I bought it. DOH! But most of them are touched up. I have a Colgan front end bra to prevent further chips. I really recommend one. It's really a high quality product. Much better than the ones made by LeBra and whatnot. Haven't seen the Nissan Bra up close though.

Anyway, sign the petition form NOW if you haven't already!!!!

How about a 2002 joining this little fracas

.....because mine has gotten a lot of chips, had one long scratch (still slightly visible after "touch up work."), and several smaller scratches. The dealer's been good about taking care of them but I don't want to have to go to them repeatedly about this.

while ive saved most of my paint from being chipped by the use of the bra, the windshield hasnt been so lucky. i have never gotten so many specs and chips in a car before in such a short while. when the sun shines a certain way, its almost impossible to see through the winshield and makes driving a bit dangerous.

paint chips

I tried registering my max on 'www.nissanpaint.com' but I keep getting an error. Is that site still supported?? Has it been moved to another address? Or is it simply dead? If there is another site, I would like to know. My paint probs are getting out of control. Thanks...

2000 SE super black with 23,000 milles. Manufactured in June 2000. I first noticed a problem the second day I owned the car. I opened the door and lightly tapped a chain around a Nissan dealership lot. A small paint chip came off. I couldn't believe it, so I opened the door again and touched the same chain on purpose. A second chip flew off! Since that day I have been very concerned about the paint. I keep a Nissan bra on it since then. I don't see how they can talk of shooting diamonds at the paint on the brochure. My 97 Max GLE (rosewood) did not have this problem.

I have a 2000 GLE and my paint and front window are horribly pitted and scratched from freeway driving. My entire front end is just covered in little marks where the paint has chipped. There are lots of threads on this. You should print this one and some others and show them to nissan. There is definately a problem with the 2000 maxima paint!

Paint problems

I got my car April of 2001 used. It was built January of 2000, I believe. Noticed the problem in August 2001. I Do mostly highway driving so I thought it was just poor road conditions. But then I got on the "ORG" and found out it's a Maxima problem. My front is so bad that I plan to get the whole thing repainted when I put on my kit. Would be nice though if Nissan could help with the bill .

Purchased my 2000 SE in May 2000

And the paint is absolutely horrible. I put a bra on the car after taking several nasty paint chips within the first couple of months. Fortunately(I think) for me another car flung a 3 foot piece of pipe at my front end at about 70 mph, so I ended up getting the front end repainted. Since then I have driven the car without the bra on at all and the new paint holds up sooooooo well. I am simply amazed that Nissan was so cheap with the paint. Their audacity to say that they shot diamonds at the paint made me lose a lot respect for Nissan. This is my 2nd Maxima and I thought I had found a car/manufacturer that I truly beleived in.

As for the glass.....my windshield has 3 nice chips in it and is just pitted all over. I was hoping that one of the chips would expand this winter so that the entire windshield could be replaced. Unfortunately, It looks like I'll be waiting until next winter.

These problems certainly are going to make me look at other cars more closely when I am ready to purchase my next car. I always planned on it being another Maxima, but not unless they address the "quality" issues by then.

I beleve my car was manufactured in April 2000.

It's not just the 2000 Maximas. I bought my 2002 SE in February.... 4000 miles and the front bumper is pitted everywhere. I even have a few gashes on it. The driver side door has a paint chip a 1/4" in diameter. The windshield has more rock chips in it than the 1998 Pontiac Grand Am I traded in for the Maxima. I drove that Grand Am four years... I only had two rock chips, which I had fixed. The paint was near immaculate... only a few small chips on the bumper.

Paint problems

I noticed paint problems right away - there is a weird patterened spot that looks like dirt under the clear coat on the top of the back doors. Took it in to 3 dealerships in St. Louis, MO got everything from "it was 'normal' based on the way the sun reflects" and "there are always minor defects - no car is perfect". Then, after 8k miles, the chips happened. I don't drive on highways to work - I work 4 miles from my house and take residential streets - so no big trucks, nothing. I had chips and scratches on the hood and front bumper - looked horrible. In fact, whenever I would clean the bugs off, there would be a new chip - I honestly believe that hitting a bug at 40 MPH caused some chips. So, I took it in again and got the usual, "we don't warranty rock chips". Fed up to the hilt - at 16k miles where my hood looked almost silver, I took the plunge and had the body shop that one of the dealers use repaint the hood and front bumper for $750. Unbelievable difference - 14k miles later - not one chip and the paint still looks brand new. On the bumper, you can see where a rock flew up and hit it and the paint is slightly indented, but not chipped - so its still black and looks great. The new paint makes an obvious difference. Now at 30k miles, my rocker panels are beat to sh** and I am generally ****ed off.

After 30 days, I waxed my car every 3 months - at 10k miles, I tried Zaino and so I'd polish and wax. It didn't seem to make a difference. I loved this car and took care of it so it's not from lack of care that my car looked horrible. I am **** about washing it and taking care of it.

That's my story - hope it helps. Thanks for listening.

Yup, me too guys...2000 SE manufactured 4/2000 bought new in 10/2000. Just hit 26,000 miles. My windshield is the same...pitted all over the place and paint chips galore on the noze. I too am **** about washing and waxing, but it doesnt seem to make any forking difference. My previous 93 Max was about the same, but after 100,000 miles. Our max's should definitely not look like they do with these 2 issues happening almost the second you drive it off the lot. The thing that kills me is when I see a car that has twice as many miles, and gets washed once every 6 months, the noze looks better than my max's...WTF?
