2k2 SE Auto VS C70 Auto

My friend has a 1999 Volvo C70 auto and i have a 2k2 SE Auto stock
he has a K&N Drop in filter and other than that, pretty much stock
i keep challenging him to race me, but he keeps saying i have no chance.....
with manual shifting on both sides and pretty equal driving skill on a fairly straight yet moderatly turning road, who would win?

Depends. What trim does he have? If he has the HT then it's going to be a close one (HT has 236hp/244tq)

Not sure what trim level he has, i know he's got five cylinders and a turbo...but i guess thats not sayin much......is the HT the highest trim level the car came in?

Both models are turbo, one just has more boost than the other and is SIGNIFICANTLY quicker. I can't imagine him having the low pressure coupe and brag about you not having a chance because a 2.5 Altima could run with it. If it is the high pressure coupe, then it will be somewhat close, but since he is autotragic, then you will win. I took out a chipped, high pressure, 5-speed coupe at the track. He ran a 14.4X in COLD weather.

I had a 850 Turbo (222 hp)which has the same engine as the HPT (high pressure turbo) C70 (236 hp w/vvt). The B5423T (I think that's the right engine no.) is very strong at high speeds. In fact, at over 100mph I think my 850 was faster than my max. The weak part about this setup is that Volvo limits the boost in 1st gear in the automatic to save the transmission, CV joints and the tires. The guy I bought the 850 from replaced it with a C70 turbo and said that he thought the 850 was a bit quicker than the C70. Anyway, you will take him to about 60 and from there on it will be a toss up until about 110mph where he will walk you. BTW if he is chipped (Wetteraur or other), the boost limit is gone in 1st gear and you wont stand a chance. Good luck, let us know how it works out.

There was a stock Volvo 850R at the track when I went up and he ran a 15.6 an then a 15.3 at about 93 MPH. I ran a 14.5 at 98 MPH .

I raced my friends 850 Turbo on eeh highway a few weeks back, we started at 50 MPH and I pulled 5 cars on him quickly and then I shut it down at 90 MPH. His car was suprisingly slow, maybe becuase he has 210,000 miles

Sorry if you don't want to hear it but there are some serious Volvos out there especially in Europe! You would need a 100shot to at least try keep up. Don't believe me...do some homework.

PS Stop whinning!

XGF (Ex Girlfriend) used to have a C70. She let me drive it a few times. Car was heavier than hell, but pretty fast. You shouldn't have a problem, but they can get the jump on ya if you're not careful.

I have a '98 S70 T5 Auto and a 2k2 SE auto (w/2k miles). My T5 ran 14.84 @ 97.33 with just a K&N in the stock airbox and 17's from a C70 (which might be a bit heavier, I haven't weighed them). This was on a 95 degree day.

My Max on the other hand, went 15.10 @ 91.25 on an 85 degree day, totally stock. The trans was slipping on the 1-2 shift and I was not manually shifting it (it had only 1150 miles on it!).

I can tell you the T5 will walk my Max on the 50-70 roll and 70-90 roll, without breaking a sweat. And forget it on a cold night. The hair dryer makes stupid power when it's cold. The Max seems like it's struggling at speeds over 100, but each time I've done that, I have had the moonroof open, so that might hinder me a bit. The Volvo is pretty strong up to about 120, then it starts to fight it's boxy front end against the wind.

As far as weight, the Volvo weighs in at 3275 (w/me-190-and 1/4 tank of 100 octane ), while my Max tips the scales at 3485 (w/me and 1/4 tank of 93).

Even with my Berk, the Max still has some catching up to do. I can tell you that it is a pain to decide which car I end up taking to the track when it is time to go. Or when its time to roll.

I guess that's the best kind of problem to have.

Awesome trap on the Volvo! What was your 60ft with the T5? With a better launch you should be at least mid 14's based on your trap (maybe a bit lower). Are you planning any mods for the "Soccer Mom" car?

If my memory serves me right, my 60' was 2.21 or 2.23. My 60' on the Max was right behind at 2.25.

I do think I could use a bit more wheelspin out of the hole. A buddy of mine has an extremely manual boost controller ($35!), and just ran a 14.2 @ 98 and backed it up with another 14.2 and a 14.3.

I'd like to put said boost controller on, and maybe a custom exhaust. An ECU upgrade is about $800!! I need my $$ for other things.

Volvo's trap high because they have a lot of top end power, there low end power is not as good so you get a some what "slower" time with a high trap speed.

BTW I almost bought a S70 T5 5spd, I was going to get the IPD chip, exhaust and a donwpipe, it would have been a monster! I wanted to get a new car this time around though and now the ugly S60 is out so I had to pass it up.
