2) I actually bought 17 X 8 and forgot....
In theory, can I measure the rim from ID lip to lip? What would be the most scientific way to check if I cannot find my receipt?

K, you have me concerned...I though I bought 17 X 7.5 and put a 245/45 on it. I am beginning to wonder if
