i got a Max SE with the AUTO...
i want to know whats the best way to start for a street race?
i raced my friend the other weekend in my 1990 maxima se and i held the brake with my left foot gassed it with my right and then let go of the brake? is that the right thing to do? what are the ideal RPM to let go at? is this harmful for the engine? tranny? brakes? anything? what would be recomended for the 2000 and for 1990? and does this translate to any auto? or are these #'s for the max?

thanks any info will help

also how bout starting in 1 and then shifting to 2 at redline and then going into 3 (o/d off) and then into D?
would that work? i mean would it be better than just punching it in D?

What you described in your first post is the way to go. The ideal RPM would be between 1000 and 1500. I've seen some people posting higer numbers, but that works for me.

To get the most out of the 5th gen autos, we'll have to manually shift through the gears (since the shift point for us is around 6200).

Torque breaking by holding in the gas and brake is probably the best way to get a good launch. 2000 rpm may be a bit much...the engine may bog down. Try launching at 1500. Don't hold the brakes for too long though. Doing this will generate a lot of heat in your torque converter and may damage it. Only hold for like a second or two. As for shifting manually, you may get better performance since you will be able to take all the way up to redline. Shift right before redline so that you don't hit the rev limiter.

so does this sound right?

put the car in 1 do the brake launch at about 1500 rpms goto right under redline and change to 2 then go to red line change to D(with O/D off) and then flick the button at almost redline so it goes into 4th?

if this sounds right let me know

if not or if someone knows something better let me know as well

thanks

Sounds good, but you should not have to go into 4th on 1/4 mile runs.

up shift about a second before it hits redline. I hit the rev limiter the first or second time i did it... it's not a good feeling! ...probably not too good on the tranny either!
