Does breaking-in make a difference?
Hey guys, I just got a new Infiniti I35, and it has about 700 miles on it.
Now, my dad has a nearly identical I35 with about 4000 miles on it, and it seems to be a lot more powerful off the line and a lot more responsive to the gas pedal.
The only thing I can figure is that his engine is "broken-in" and that has possibly gained him the extra performance. Does this sound plausible? Does breaking it in really add that much of a difference in performance?
Or is this another one of those "the grass is always greener on the other side" kinda things?
Thanks,
John

performance
My 2000 I30 seems to get better with age. I noticed that performance seemed poor at first but improved after the first 1000 miles. Maybe in my head? Don't know, but other have said the VQ engine seems stronger after the break in period.
Enjoy the new car!

the magazines dont like to test a max
until they get 5000 miles on them. they make much more HP once broken in. Actually, the VQ breaks in up to 10K, but you only need to baby it that first 1k.

Sorry to bring this back up guys, but I've got over 1000 miles now - all done under city driving conditions and hardly taking it past 3k RPM. Can I get on this thing now? I've been driving myself crazy taking it easy on this thing.
Also, does anyone with an automatic think it kinda shifts funny? Like maybe sometimes it slams into a gear (when you first push the pedal)? Or when you let up after accelerating it feels as though it downshifts and is slowing down due to being in a lower gear?
Then again, it could just be the paranoia...
Thanks again!

the max is known for soft shifts... with moments of sheer terror..
if you do not increase thottle in a linear fashion, ie roll out alittle then punch it, the max will treat you to a near neutral drop. Its something you learn to drive around. even 4th gens will *bang* down to first if you bump stop. the max has enough torque to pull you from stopped in 2nd. but if the ecu decided you've loaded the tranny and are applying more power, it will drop to first for you. *bammm* nearly loaded my pants the first time I heard that. seems to not have any adverse affects, even to the 4th gen guys with tons of miles. you'll learn to drive around it subconsciously.

I agree with Tim. Although "An Automatic is an automatic" there are some lesson's to be learned. Feel the car and how it works, even if it's not a manual transmission knowing how to work the auto will make a world of difference in how your car reacts to your style of driving.
