Tarus SHO
I was running on the turnpike today coming from VA and i ran in to this ford. His driving skillz was on point he could fit that car through any thing, and it moves, i think it was faster than my 2k with berk intake. But i guess thats why im getting the six speed 2k2

Yeah it would be, especially looking at thats not why im changing cars. I just said that as another benefit ill get from getting the 2k2. I never wanted my gxe i more like settled for it but it has no options except the fog lights i added. The color is ok but, nothing on my car is what i wanted.

It's funny you guys mention 'Taurus SHO', I have quick kill story about a 2nd gen SHO.
I was heading home for lunch one day last week on Rt 18 North (New Brunswick,NJ heading towards Somerset) and I'm in the left lane behind some car at a stop light (with cars in the lanes to right of me). Now, I'm on a three lane hwy that turns into a two laner about 200yds from the light. As the light turns green, I briskly acclerate (but not too hard)to the point where the road becomes two lanes. In my rear view mirror, I see this 2nd gen SHO jumped from the right lane (around some other car) and roll up to my bumper as I'm in the left lane still pacing the car ahead of me. I didn't pay him much mind until the right lane cleared up and I jumped into the right lane and accelerated. THEN, I see this guy still on my bumper. So I floor it and he hung with me till about 100mph at which point he began to fade to about 4-5 car lengths (still fading slightly). At this point my exit approaches and as I slow down, the SHO pulled up to my rear bumber with a 'full head of steam'.
I'm looking in my mirror laughing and shaking my head. I started laughing harder when I heard his loud exhaust and saw this triple-gauge pod on his A-pillar. Whatever mods he has, it's not enought to run with the 2K2 Max!! (I hope for his sake, he had an auto tranny.)

My screen name used to be sho_mann...
I used to own a 1990 Taurus SHO. They were one of the first sports sedans (Buick Grand Nationals aside) that were very prevelant. The reason is that Ford's special vehicle team shoe-horned in a VERY potent V-6 (3.0 DOHC 222hp/218torque) made by Yamaha. There is some specualation that the first Yamaha engine that Ford tested generated over 300 hp at the flywheel. Ford, not wanting to overpower the Mustang and realizing that such an engine would destroy the frame/chassis that they had to put it in detuned it. However, it should be noted that the aftermarket for the SHO is very similar to the Maxima. In short, the SHO V-6 can easily (I stress easily) be tuned to 300+ hp and many go way beyond that. It is a very good match for every Maxima excluding the 2002 from the factory and those cars would be close to 1o years old...
Now, that aside, the engine and transmission from these early 90 models (commonly refered as 2nd gen) were the ONLY shining stars of the car. The steering, brakes, and suspension were good (but not great like the engine) but the rest of the car fairly destroyed itself around you. The Maxima is a sports sedan overall, but I can tell you from experience that anything less than a 5th generation Maxima (stock of course) will have it's lunch handed to it, already eaten...so don't get too cocky out there...

1996 SHO
I traded my 1996 V8 SHO for my max. I had an exhaust system, and an CAI with K&N.
My 6speed will WALK the SHO...another salesman at my office has a 1994 SHO...which is the V6, it was "Quicker" 0-30 than my V8...BUt the V8 handled better.
2K2...auto, or 6SP will take a SHO any day of the week and twice on Sundays.
FYI....All models of SHO were Yamaha Marine engines. VERY nice engines.
Yall be cool.

Your right... been in Maximaland too long..
...it clouds the mind
The 3rd gen motors were 240 hp (I believe - don't hit me !) DOHC V-8s made by Yamaha as well...
Oh and I appreciate being corected when I am wrong so thank you very much...

My buddy at work and I had this same "arguement", it was all in fun.
I was a member of the SHO forum, and there are all kinds of specs....just like there are here......and the V8 is Yamaha made....to my, and the forums knowledge.
anyway.....whats the point, i got a car that will whoop ANY sho's ****!!

I used to own a 1992 SHO and it would easily walk my 2k1 Maxima w/auto. But as far as quality there is no comparision. I know for a fact that my SHO would spank 5.0 Mustangs all day and it would also bury it's 150mph speedo. So don't think that your a big shot with your 2k2 Maxima auto, now 6spd that's a different story. Most likely if you spanked one it was either the V8 or the driver didn't try. Just my 2 cents.

i also had a 92 sho 5spd. pulleys, larger mass. air, intake, ypipe and dynomax exhaust.that car was great. allmost never lost a race on the highway. spanked every thing from a modded lx 5.0 mustang to a 99 maxima to a eclipse tsi to a 86 coervtte. even paced a 96 z28 to about 140 and girlfriend got scared. this was back in 99 i had this car.i remember going to the drag strip. i was racing a impala ss,he had headers ,pulleys ,chip, intake and full exhaust.he would beat me in 1st gear and half way through second then i would walk right by him by atleast a 1 car lead at finish. (he had torque and i did not) we raced about 6 times and i allways won in the end.mid 14s i believe......the car was much more supperior on the highway.buried the 140 speedo no problem. but i have to say since i bought this max i ran 2 sho's on the highway and walked them both ! (probilly auto's i would think)

SHO beat Maxima yeah RIGHT!!!!
I'll start by saying yes the SHO is fast, but capable of beating a Maxima very unlikely. A 3rd gen is just about equal to it.
Ill start of by saying that in 93 my parents were looking to by a new car they looked at the Intrepid the Camry the Taurus and the Altima. They realized the Altima was a little small, and the dealer showed them this 92 Maxima SE 5 speed. One test drive later it was sold. A test of a SHO by MT in oct. of 92 got these results 7.5 0-60 and 15.4@ 88.9 In the same month they tested the maxima SE and it recorded a 7.3 0-60 and a 15.7@90.6 1/4. In 1989 july issue the Taurus SHO tested at 8.0 0-60 and 16.2@90 in the 1/4 In the may 95 issue the 95 Taurus tested at 7.7 0-60 and a 15.8@87.9 1/4 and in Oct 96 issue the V-8 SHO tested at 7.5 0-60 and a 15.7@88.6. In july 95 the motor trend import car of the year tested at 6.6 0-60 and a 15.2@92.4 1/4. The 97 maxima tested a little slower but was still faster than the following SHO times and the first 5th generation is about the same in test as the 95 4th generation. AS for eating a maximas lunch I seriously doubt it. The SHO should be happy to even be able to compete with the almighty Maxima.
P.S. Taurus SHO could never compete with a 5.0 Mustang especially the light one of late 80's and early 90's.

Re: SHO beat Maxima yeah RIGHT!!!!
Those numbers don't even tell half the story. For some reason I've noticed the test numbers for the SHO vary hugely. Some tests reports 0-60 times in the 7.5 second range while other reported it in 6.6 seconds. I'm a longtime SHO owner (94 ATX) who is getting the itch for another car and it looks like it will be a Maxima. After having driven a couple of G5 Max's (and running with some on the street) I can tell you for certain that stock for stock, nothing short of a 2k2 will beat a stock V-6 SHO (ATX vs ATX, MTX vs MTX).
Stock Gen 2 SHOs have been certified to run as low as 14.7 in the 1/4 with full interior, stock air filter and spare tire/jack still in the trunk...takes a really experienced driver though since as noted by another poster the SHO suffers from off the line traction problems. The car really shines above 40mph...try anything on a roll and the SHO might eat you alive, the upper powerband on those motors is quite impressive. Modded some cars run well in excess of 350 fwhp, one guy is pushing near 500fwhp and holds several ECTA speed records (http://www.setel.com/~ransom/).
To set the record straight on a few things:
- V-6 was a total Yamaha motor, built exclusively for Ford.
- V-8 was a stretched 3.0l Duratec V-6 block with a Yamaha top end.
- Gen 1 ran from 89-91, MTX only.
- Gen 2 ran 92-95, ATX offered from 93-95.
- Gen 3 ran from 96-99 and offered only an ATX bolted to the 235hp V-8.
- V-6's are generally considered faster than the V-8, largely by virtue of the 5 speed on the V-6...the V-8 is a far better chassis.
- All of the transmissions are generally considered to be fragile. The ATX's are beefed up Escort trannies and tend to fail in the G2 units, the MTX's tend to grenade their differential pins through the houseing if you do too many one wheel burnouts (an easy thing to do in a SHO).
- The Grand National is not a sedan Maxxximus.
Sorry to go on an on...and on...and on...

I had a '93 SHO auto and the car was fast. The intake runners felt like turbo! Anyway, at about 90K miles, my transmission stop going in reverse. It would have cost me $2500 which was more than the car is worth so I got a 2K2 SE Max auto. I can tell you, stock, my Max will smoke a SHO, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gen.

Re: Re: SHO beat Maxima yeah RIGHT!!!!
Thank god, someone else who knows.
A SHO can and will spank Mustangs, Maximas, etc. Those cars are VERY hard to drive. The G1's not only had traction problems (INSANE torque steer) but had a HEAVY clutch. Driving that car was a true workout for your left leg. Therefore, not everyone who owns one can properly drive it and a 4th or 5th gen 3.0L Maxima could take them, but even with an average driver, that SHO could very well walk an experienced Maxima driver in 2nd and/or 3rd gear.
Downfalls: It took FOREVER for that car's heater to warm up in the Winter and FOREVER for it to cool down in the Summer. The headliners come off, the electric systems fail, the leather seats crack easily under heavy wear.
That said, it pulled way harder than any 4th or 5th gen Maxima I've ever driven in (and that was stock) and would likeley spank either on the highway.
The auto's were fast, but nothing at all like a 5sp. The V8 was a HUGE disappointment. As a SHO enthusiast, I was really hoping for low 6 second 0-60 numbers, but instead all we got was an auto tranny only policy and a marginal at best 0-60 time. That's when I stopped following them.
Beleive me guys, if you come up on a G1 SHO, LOOK OUT!!

Re: My screen name used to be sho_mann...
I, too, had the 1st gen SHO - first year to be precise - 1989. Liked the car, but as with all the Fords I've had recently, tranny/clutch and electrical issues were the worst. The killer for me was the third time it left me on the side of the road, just dead!
Seems California has been able to get Ford to admit and replace their thin-film ignition modules which were always failing. But the fix came too late for them to keep me. I traded for a Contour SVT - and I never rode the bus so much. Best handling car I've ever had, but I couldn't keep it on the road. So, I bid Ford farewell.
The 2000 Maxima GXE has been nearly flawless - paint chips and one failed coil pack - for 63,000 miles. And this engine is every bit as much fun as the SHO Yamaha was. And I often recommend the Max to those who bemoan the passing of the SHO.
But I've got to admit to loving the look of the intake on the SHO! What a sexy looking beast. See the picture in the previous post.

Finally some accurate information!

2nd Gen SHO
Five years ago when I had my 1991 Eagle Talon Tsi (AWD, turbo) I raced a 2nd Gen SHO. Not sure if it had any mods, but my Talon was making about 250hp and would run a 14.0. I raced this early 20s guy from a roll, he had national gaurd plates, and he was probably modded. I pulled about a lenght. Overall very impressed, that car was quick. And he sounded very surprised when we talked after I beat him. So I take it he didn't lose very many.

Iv'e beaten a couple of the Yamaha powered SHO's in my '98 Maxima which was bone stock. I do realize how fast those cars are so I would always procede with caution. From what I can remember It seemed like I actually out powered them more so that out drove them. Now that I have my 2K2 Max I wouldn't be afraid to go up against any old SHO I see.

My best friend had a 90 SHO all through HS. that thing was fast, and it was certainly a lot of fun through us. The similarities between the SHO and the 5G Maxima are amaxing. 220hp - 222hp, 218 tq - 217tq, variable intake runners, available in 5 speed, 4 doors, sleeper look. fast up top while hard to launch. its really weird when you think about it. f
Now, my understanding has always been that a MTX 1G SHO will beat an auto 5G max but not by much, while both MTX the max will win but again not by much...
Once you throw mods in its all out the window, then its a question of who can spend more money.
