Ist long trip in Max

Just got back from vacation. I drove to San Diego and back. Each way was 1,350 miles...22 hours. Speeds were mostly between 70-80 mph. The car was very comfortable and the climate control KICKS A**!! Anyone get a musty smell when opening the sun shade for the sun roof? It goes away after a bit, but it's always there when I first open it.

I'm still perturbed as H*LL at the whistling sound my Frankencar intake makes between 2K-3K rpm. I'm almost to the point of getting rid of it any going back to stock or trying something else.

The car did not slow down one bit on ANY grade with cruise control. I was passing EVERYONE, and there was some pretty steep hills!

Gas mileage was pretty good, even when cruising along at 80 mph on
I-5. It varied from 23-27.6 mpg depending on traffic, speeds, etc.

My car is definitely a keeper!

I drove my 2k from my South Georgia to Las Vegas and back last year. 4,623 miles round trip. The most fun I've had in a long time. Going through Arizona and New Mexico where the speed limit is 75 mph I would usually set the cruise on 90 and drive for hours without hitting the brakes. The Max never broke a sweat!

Check out the pics I took along the way if you want.

My Frankencar made the same whistling noise. Someone said that you have to tighten the clamps. My solution was to turn up the radio

that smell...

when I drove down to Miami/Key West last month, I was getting that smell in the morning when I opened the sunshade. it was the extreme humidity getting all mildewy in there from the heat. as soon as I got out of that climate, the smell went away.

Good point. It was a little more humid in San Diego than where I'm from.

Thanks,

The clamps are as tight as they're going to get. I have been told that the noise is unavoidable as it's the sound of the air whistling through the butterfly valve in the intake. The only reason you can't hear it w/o the intake installed is b/c the stock intake has the resonator, which hides the sound.

I turn up the radio, too. But it's still annoying and as far as I'm concerned it's unacceptable for a $30K car. I guess there's a good argument after all for all that "unnecessary" Nissan stuff under the hood!!!

Wooh... that's risky... did you know speeding over 85 in Arizona is a felony? They don't give you a ticket... they haul you to jail until the judge makes time to discuss your situation. Then... you pay the tow, you pay the court fees, you spend the night in jail, then you pay the fine. But it's much better to pay the lawyer... remember, it's a felony and that can severely limit job opportunities so you'll want it taken care of.

We have GOT to be talking about different noises!!!!! Ever hear that guy pull up next to you at a red light and his brakes squeal in that high-pitched super-annoying sound? That's exactly what my whistle sounds like. I can't imagine anyone loving that sound.

WOW! No, I didn't know that. I will be much more careful if I make that trip again. That would certainly ruin a good road trip. I can't believe they are that strict. In Georgia, they won't even pull you over until you are doing 11 mph over the speed limit and you have to be doing 26 mph over the speed limit before they can site you for reckless driving.

The practical side of it, I don't know... I live in Texas. But I've driven to LA several times and I10 between Tucson and Phoenix can be a racetrack... and I don't know how.

I became very aware of the felony offence once traveling I-8 (bypassing Phoenix) at about 95. Trooper pulled me over and I was thinking great... $100 ticket. But he comes up after running my plates, asks if I'm a veteran (it was veterans day weekend 2000.) I said yes so he gives me a warning for 84... and tells me why he has to lower it for the warning. I had completely forgotten about the felony in AZ... in complete compliance with his wishes, I went the speed limit all the way to CA... whereupon I followed the rest of the traffic at 95-100 on in to Palm Springs.

That was a scary revelation... two nights and three days in jail until the judge returned was not something I looked forward to I tell you what.

In Georgia, I was profiled, and was pulled over for doing 8mph over. (This, on I-75, southbound near macon last March.)

Kissed the cops ***, got a warning ticket, drove the speed limit until I was out of his jurisdiction, then took the car back up to speed...

From what I've read of the laws, the speed grace area depends on the type of police. The GA State Patrol can pull you over and ticket you for 1 mph over the speed limit if they feel like it. They usually don't though. I guess they just use their judgement depending on road conditions (raining, heavy traffic, etc.). The Local County Sheriff's Depts. and City Police Depts. can pull you over if they think you look suspicious. (like if they saw a 18 year old driving a Lincoln Navigator with the back end dragging the ground headed South, they might suspect them of trafficing drugs.)
But can't actually give you a ticket until you hit 11mph over the limit.

Which one pulled you over.

Hmmm... It was a bright sunny day, mid-70's, about 3pm. Light traffic.

I'm over 40 (hair was a bit long at the time) and wasn't driving insane.

It was a county sheriff, if I remember right. I saw absolutely no reason why he should pull me over, unless I was profiled. I've got the warning ticket around someplace...

I'd avoid the whole damn state if it wasn't standing in the way between Chicago and Florida... (Alabama down to the panhandle doesn't work for me, either. I-10 Eastbound sucks rocks... )

I got a ticket for going over 100 MPH, I was actually doing over 150 in my WS6 Tran Sam racing a Ferrari 308...when I got zapped. I managed to slam the brakes , and downshift to 4th...but he still got me for 100.... I just paid the fine and that was it. I think it was I 40.... Oh, and after seeing Tony's car in person, it is sweet. He has meticulously gone through it and has a kickin stereo.... Hope to see ya soon again in Sd Tony,.... pleasure to have you at the races !.. Merlot AE ==== NICE !

So it sounds like there is some latitude in how they handle it... but as for me, any time I go through AZ I will set cruise no higher than 84 and know my speedo error. The possibility of catching a felony offense after getting caught in some local yokel's speed trap just doesn't appeal to me.

I got pulled over one time doing 8 over and the cop gave me a ticket...went to court and the judge looked at the cop and asked him if he was trying to push qouta b/c it was at the end of the month. The judge told the cop not to do it until 11 over, but sometimes they give tickets just for the hell of it.
