Does anyone know if we can add the steering wheel radio control from the 2001 Maxima on 2K Maxima? There is a slot for it currently on the steering wheel.

Thanks,
Steve.

Slot?? We do??
Wouldn't the radio have to support the feature?

I doubt it

The shape of the 2001 wheel is slightly different.

The shape of the cruise control is also different, and I suspect the shape of the cutouts is also different.

Is the 2000 Radio the same? (both basic and premium?)... or did that change as well...

Because, I figure that if the radio supports it, it IS possible..

I wouldn't necessarily go through the trouble of buying the control, and running the wire..., but it is an interesting question...

Nissan Quest has steering wheel radio controls

The Nissan Quest has the radio controls on the steering wheel that match the cruise control on the Maxima's. It might even be the same stering wheel out of the 2000 Max. The Quest's radio controls should fit in the "plug" on the left side of the steering wheel ...but I don't know if it is wired for it.

I took the plug off of the steering wheel and found no wires. There is really no way of knowing if the Quest steering wheel control would work with the Maxima radio...even if it could be wired.

This might be worth looking into.

There isn't any wires, but there is a plug clip where one can be added. Is the 2K1 Maxima radio the same as the 2K? I have BOSE Radio. It would be GREAT if I could add this to my MAX.

ditto. I was trying to get this answer out of Bose and Nissan before. Total wastes of time. I found out Clarion actually makes the head unit. I'm going to try to call them on Monday and see if I can't get an answer out of them. ...wish me luck.

It's been a while since I took apart a steering wheel/airbag, but I know that some cars with airbags that have integrated controls on the steering wheel (i.e. radio, cruise, etc.) will have what was called a "clock spring" inside of the steering wheel assembly instead of running individual wires to the devices.

The clock spring is a circular piece of a printed circuit board that supplies electricity to the needed controls on the wheel. I remember that it was crucial to install these properly with the wheel centered, since the circuit board is compressed in a circular "spring" so when the steering wheel turns you will always have electricity supplied to the controls. Install one of these incorrectly, and the first time you turn the wheel you break the clock spring assy and lose electricity to the wheel.

Maybe someone has taken out a 5tg Gen airbag already and knows if there is a clock spring? I am almost positive that the clock spring would be different on the 2K1 cars with the radio controls on the wheel, and would need to be changed on a 2K.

Just do what i want to do..

I wanna get the steering wheel from a Q45 or a new QX4 and put it in the max. Look at the wheel from the QX4. It looks just like the 2k steering wheel except it has wood trim on it and radio controls (i think). The cruise control buttons look the same as does the airbag cover. Any one know if this would work???

The radio unit is identical...

but the wheel and cutouts are different. Unless the thread above about the Quest controls is accurate, I think there may not be a control module that fits on the Maxima wheel.
