Are Dust Boots Really Necessary For The Rear Struts?

I believe I asked this question before with no responses. I couldn't separate the bumpstop from the dust boot when I dropped the car, and from the amount of org members telling me to trim, I did it. So, I left the dust boot off the rear struts, but the fronts are on because they were able to come off of the dust boot.

Dust boots add a lot to shock life by keeping dirt off the shaft where it can damage the seals.
