There are 6 different tires manufacture that I can find to provide the size that we need for the original SE 17" wheels

I think you should bold face the information only! y2kse should be here shortly asking where did you get this information. BTW I have heard some people say good things about the pilots!

I know the website provides this info, but it is interesting that when you look at the actual tire specs, 8.0" is the rim width shown...

 

Is this for 225 50 17? I heard that that the manufacturer said you can substitiute a 245 45 17. My buddy has been running on his FOREVER with no problems!!!

Yup. You've got that right.

This is a wonderful find. It isn't the first time that information from a tire manufacturer was in error and it won't be the last. Both Nitto and Goodyear published specs at one time that indicated that the minimum rim width for some of their 235/45R17 tires was 7.0". It didn't take them long to correct their specifications once I brought the errors to their attention.

Now this would be really neat for somebody to take on besides me. After all, I don't want to have ALL the fun. Since you were the person to discover this, exunaja, why don't you call Dunlop next Monday. You can reach them toll-free at 1-800-548-4714. Tell them you want to discuss a safety issue regarding improper tire sizing on their Fitment Guide. That should escalate the issue to the correct department. Point out the information that you posted from the Fitment Guide for a 5th Gen Maxima, tell them that the OEM rims on a 5th Gen Maxima are only 7.0" wide, and then point them to their own tire specs. Finally, lean back and get ready to giggle . . . A LOT!

If you don't want to do it, let me know. I absolutely LOVE to make tire manufacturers squirm.

instead, why dont we call them and beg for the correct size? I mean, they are going to fix the page.. but at least while you have their attention, make our case.. there has to be almost a million maxs and i30/5s now that will use 225s.

 

I LOVE my Berk. I just can't wait for it to destroy my MAF Sensor!

 

I'll put in a plug for the 225s when I speak to Dunlop on Monday . . . unless, of course, exunaja decides he wants to call them instead.

What you failed to mention, ssiperko, is that the Approved Rim Contours (AKA Rim Widths) you refer to come directly from Tire and Rim Association tables published in the 2002 Dealer Tire Guide. Obviously I received the guide . . . all 350 pages of it . . . and I sincerely want to thank you for sending it to me. The T&RA Charts are indispensible as is the graphic on how to measure rim width from the Rubber Manufacturers Association.

I scanned the charts and the graphic and e-mailed them to BigDogJonx. He said he'd host them on his web site and let me know once they were set up, but I haven't heard from him yet. If he hasn't responded by Monday, I'll send them to Kevin and ask him to host them. One way or the other, I'd like to see the information end up in the FAQs so that everyone has an opportunity to use the data when making tire/rim decisions.

 

remember to share the "joy" and see wether they can give us couple sets of tires for free with 225/50/17 size!

Point well taken. Even if we get more manufacturers to make tires in our OEM size of 225/50R17, I doubt we'll ever get a better performing tire than the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. It's just too bad that the Michelins are so damned expensive.
