Too early to wax?

I've had my new 2K2 for a whopping 4 days now and I was sitting in traffic today watching the heat cook on my hood. I wanted to put a layer of polish and wax to get some protection.

Does anyone know if the factory puts any wax on the clear coat?
Is it too early to polish and wax my Majectic Blue baby?

Nope, it's not to early to wax. I have a Majestic Blue 02 also, and I waxed it the first weekend I had it. It was the older cars that the paint had to cure for a certain period of time. What type of wax are you planning on using? I use Zaino and I love the look and durability.

But I think you should let the car's sheetmetal cool down out of that sun before your try washing/waxing it.

definitely. all waxes should say to only wax when the surface is cool. never wax in direct sunlight.

the wax pretty much cooks on the car and is pretty hard to wipe off. if you put the wax on after the car has been sitting in the sun you can see it start to steam right when you apply it.

thanks for the info. so if you put on the wax while the car is hot, it's just hard to wipe off, but it doesn't damage the paint or anything, correct?

check your build date on the door...

if 3 months have passed, then generally the paint has had time to cure.

With zaino it is okay to put it on in the sun. When the car is really hot though I spray the polish sponge with Z6 and then put the Z2 on the sponge it glides on the car and gets the job done a lot faster.

correct. it wont hurt the paint as far as i know. but it takes a lot of elbow grease to get the sun-dried wax off.

a) It's never too early to wax the vehicle. But the key to any wax (or polymer sealant like Klasse or Zaino) is proper paint preparation.
For example, I owned my 2002 SE a month before I had an opportunity to do the following:

Wash car with Meguiar's Gold Class Shampoo (You might want to substitute Dawn to remove waxes)

Clayed with a Clay Magic Clay Bar to remove contaminants such as rail dust

Polished with Klasse All In One to remove oxidation

Waxed with Pinnacle Souveran

After I did that, the car was gleaming.

b) Everyone's correct that waxing in the sun makes it harder to remove. But many peeps will use a quick detailer and a towel to remove the hardened wax.

anyone try that

Eagle One wet wax spray. You spray it on your car while it's still wet from the wash and when you dry - voila.

I never would've considered it, 'cept Eagle 1 is s'posed to be high quality stuff.

prinz,
any reason you went ahead with the souveran rather than going with the SG after the AIO??? i know the souveran would put a deeper look to the paint, but i would of figured that you'd put the souveran after the SG.

I am trying to save a lot of things for when I get my Porter Cable Polisher. Once I get the polisher and the pads, then I am going to put 4 coats of SG on it.

I'd say about 2 months...just to be safe. In any event, check when your Maxima was built. I bought mine at the end of March and the door sticker said it was built 12/01. It seems that it takes a good month and half before it arrives to the dealership from Japan.

Hey, since we're on the topic of waxing, I was wondering, how many times are you actually supposed to wax? once a month?

Thankz in advance...

If the car is brand new do I really need to do all that prep work (besides the wash?)

The funny thing is that most folks don't think you need to do that much prep work on a new car. But the irony is that it does help. For starters, many cars have rail dust and other contaminants from transport and from sitting in dealer lots. The plastic they put on the cars only protects a percentage of the car. A claying will get rid of the contaminants.

Certain waxes wear faster than others (e.g. Meguiar's). The most durable is One Grand Blitz. Right behind that is P21s Carnuba. The Souveran I use is one of the least durable (but glossiest) waxes.
