Considering fixing up the maxima.

I have an Automatic Maxima, mostly driven by the wife. She wants to be as fast as the 2002 Maxima. I told her it's hard to get 33 more hp on the crank out of her 222hp auto maxima. She used to race, lowered civic, blah blah blah. She thinks she could get 33 more hp out of it or maybe close to it.

Besides the Stillen Supercharger, what is the best way to upgrade the Maxima and where is a good deal? I was thinking of getting the short intake ram and exhaust from stillen, but I wasn't sure if they are expensive. Is it possible with just intake and exhaust that you'll get at least 20hp to the crank? I'm not familiar with mods on the Maxima, more or less on my Toyota. We're both a previous Honda owner for 6 years or more. This is a new scene for me at least.

Thanks for all the input.

You have a pretty cool wife. Do some fishing around with the search function. There's a ton of information on here.

Personally, I think the Stillen stuff is overpriced (other than the Y Pipe).

I would get this stuff in this order:
1. Y-Pipe (Stillen/Cattman/Warpspeed) $500 ballpark
2. Intake- I just ordered the Frankencar midpipe and the Berk Tuning Intake $130
3. Custom catback and muffler (although there seems to be some debate about how much hp this really adds....plus noise levels are an issue) $250
4. Ooglie CAI $15- Home Depot- Do a search
5. Underdrive Pulley- $200
6. Aluminum Flywheel- $500

Rims, springs, FTSB, RSB, etc are always options, but you want more hp....like me.

Check out www.custommaxima.com for some general ideas. www.eatricezone is another good one.

Re: Considering fixing up the maxima.

You can gain peak HP and stay NA, but the difficulty will be matching the torque output of the 2K2.

Hmmmm. NOS?

BTW, some of the options asu174 mentioned are mutually exclusive. You won't do both 2 & 4 and you won't do both 5 & 6 . . . unless you want to drop your crankshaft, that is!

You should be able to get 20 hp pretty easily with a Y-pipe, Intake and Catback Exhaust.

Humm, thanks. She wants to pass smog and not want to do any Nitrous or Engine work. I told her Port and Polish the head, 3 angle valve job, extrudehone the intake/exhaust manifold, maybe MSD if it works on the maxima.

Aluminum Flywheel- $500, my car is an auto. She already bought rims.

The main thing is that she wants a car that could beat mine and I told her to get the 2k2 Maxima instead or the 2k2 Altima will do as well.

Why not 2 and 4? You can make the ooglie one and run it to point at the filter of the intake can't you? It might not work as well as a true CAI, but it still circulates fresh air.

5 and 6? crankshaft? How? Do you need to replace the clutch to do this?

Re: 2 & 4, I don't believe you'll increase air circulation sufficiently to obtain any real performance benefit from adding an ooglie.

Re: 5 & 6, I read a thread a long time ago that said it's not a good idea to install both a UDP and a lightened flywheel. I'm not sure why that is, but you risk unbalancing your crankshaft if you do.

No way..... He'll get hosed trading in. Add the Y pipe and intake and see how she likes it.

And while I am not too familiar with the "unbalanced" thread that Y2KSE is referring to, I am fairly confident that an ooglie CAI would make a difference worth well over it's $15 invenstemnt(when properly installed).

I had a talk with the wife, and thanks for the input.

She's going to buy the new G35 and trade in the Maxima. I told her to wait for the coupe, but she doesn't want to wait. I guess 260hp is enough for her. I wouldn't mind for the 280hp G35 Coupe with the engine sharing the same platform as the Z and chassis the same as the Skyline V35 in Japan.

It's funny how she and I used to drive honda and now she's crazy about Nissan. Nissan has some crazy design and fast engine.

The G35 starts at $27,000
