Exhaust
Exhaust
Hey does anyone know what kind of muffler will sound good on my max and will install really easily. I know I have to buy the B pipe from Stillen or somebody first. My friend has a lift at his house and so I want to save money and install it myself. Does anyone know of anything that is a direct bolt-on, without needing to cut any pipe or add hangers and hooks? I want it to go in easy and sound deep. I want a sound somewhere between a 4 cyl civic and a v8 mustang. I don't have a y pipe either. I'm on the GD for the GReddy EVO, but it seems that its on back order, so it'll be 2 months until they get in. I can't wait that long. By then, the summer will be just about over and I'll be back at school. I'm thinking bout calling them and cancelling my order.
Will the HKS with the b pipe added be a direct bolt on?
Thanks so much

As far as bolt ons go, I have no clue. I paid around $300 for the muffler, custom catback, and resonator installed.

On the other hand, if you want a prefabricated, bolt-on system and you're willing to spend $600.00 or so, there's always the Greddy Evo and the Cattman catback exhaust. But then you already know about the Greddy . . .

And I'm pretty sure that Midas doesn't have mandrel bend capabilities. lol Everyone says mandrel is the way to go, so I want that. So, if I buy the muffler you got and a b pipe from Stillen, will those fit together?

Second, I wasn't aware that Stillen makes a B-pipe for the 5th Gen Maxima, but perhaps I'm wrong about that. Cattman, however, does make a B-pipe.
Third, I don't know if a Cattman B-pipe will fit together properly with an HKS rear section. But it should fit together properly with a Cattman rear section.

First, you don't need a mandrel bender to fabricate a mandrel-bent exhaust. All you need are mandrels. They can be cut to shape and welded together to form a complete catback system.

I still don't know what type of bends were done on mine. They just slid it through this machine and it bent the bar. It's probably the crappy bent one, but I got my money's worth either way. I don't see a $400 difference worthwhile for a different type of bend.
I still can't believe Y2KSE replied to me within three minutes. That's just wrong..........

Even the Greddy catback exhaust has been dyned at 5 frigging hp on this site. Worth $600? I think not. Our mufflers haved been developed to optimize exhaust performance. Now a Y-pipe on the other hand has been dynoed at a whopping twelve hp by org. members. The only bad thing is that the Y-pipe will not make a noticeable sound. Hope this helps. Please note that I'm not trying to flame on exhaust set-ups, just trying to inform from what I've learned here on the org.

The bottom line is that people are going to buy what they want to buy. The best we can do is point out to them that they don't NEED to spend $600.00 to acquire a high-performance catback exhaust system the equivalent of any name-brand catback on the market. They can have a custom catback fabricated at a reputable muffler shop for about 1/2 that amount and get all the benefits of the name-brand system except bragging rights. That will persuade some to investigate the alternatives. But for those who are dedicated to purchasing a Greddy or an HKS or a Stillen or a Cattman exhaust system, no amount of common sense will prevail upon them to do otherwise.

I agree with everything you said except one thing. My Y-pipe definitely makes a noticeable sound. But perhaps that's because the rest of my exhaust system isn't completely stock. If it were, the Y-pipe might be as silent as you suggest.

On a completely stock setup, the Y-Pipe makes a slight "vroom" at 3500+ RPMs. But it is very slight. With muffler, etc, it makes everything else louder.

It was really more of a "swoosh" than a "vroom". I was fairly disappointed with the noise level because I wanted something mean-sounding and the Y-Pipe didnt do it for me....
