Hello,
My Dad has a 2000 Maxima SE, 5 speed. He has recently expereienced a strange vibration when braking from 140km/h. He took the car to Nissan, and they suspect that he has a warped rotar. Apparently this isn't covered under the warranty. The car just had its brakes serviced about a month ago, and Nissan never mentioned anything about the rotars. Has anyone else expereienced this? How exactly do you warp a rotar?

Yep, I am about to go into the service for that myself

Some people here got the rotors replaced for free. The dealer told me that they will cut the rotors to get rid of that vibration when braking.
I don't really care what they do, if they stop vibration I get when braking.

I didn't ask the guy if that will be covered under warranty.
I am expecting it to be. My car is only 6 months old.
If they start saying to me it won't be covered, I will start breaking things at the dealer.

You should be a little more demanding with the dealers and don't let then BS you. There are a few people on the board that got them replaced under warranty. The way you warp you rotors is from constant heavy braking. What happens is the rotors heat up drastically causing them to warp. Sometimes getting them cut solves the problem, but usally replacing them is a better option.

I just had my car in the shop for this problem yesterday. They are ordering new parts. I'm not sure what all they are going to replace. I have just under 10k miles on my car and they are handling it under warranty.

Hmmm...I guess that this is not that unusual then. I'll let him know and we'll see if we can get it fixed under warranty.

Thanks for the info.

Is there a list or a site which lists common problems for the new Maxima?

I've heard of the warped rotor problem two times on this board..... (I haven't been here for very long, tho)

#1. NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER wash your Maxima right after you drive it.... I always let it cool for at least a few min (ie. 5-10 min), because rumor has it that the rapid cooling caused by the water could potentially warp your rotors.. (Personally, I am not a 100% certain that this may in fact be a legitimate reason to worry, but I'd better be safe than sorry...)

#2. Torque Braking, (a method for taking off faster from a stop, by holding down your brake, and rev'ing the engine, then releasing the brake), also warps rotors.

#3.. Last time this came up, I was told that warped rotors are NOT covered by warrenty... Then once, someone mentioned a 10,000 mile limit for such service (i dunno, just repeating what i heard here before)... I guess it might depend on the circumstances.. or possibly your dealer's particular mood on that day...
