Tire size, please help

This weekend I went to Costco to order Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. ($209/piece and $60 off if buy all 4)I have 17x7.5 wheels and I wanted to order 235/45/17. But Michelin is sold out and there is a long wait for them. They have 245/40/17's in stock. I know this topic was discussed numerus time, but they showed me in the Michelin technicalbook that minimum wheel size for these size tires is 7.5
Is it save to run with these tires? Does anyone have these combination? What are the disadventages?

Uh, you may want to look again...

http://tires.michelin-us.com:80/asse...lotsportas.pdf

Looks to me like that size needs an 8.0".

I checked the website too, but Costco had Michelin Technical Book which contradicts their own website.

The speedometer error with 245/40R17s is 4.4%. That exceeds the maximum recommended speedometer error of 3.0%. In addition, the load rating is 91. That's still in spec for a 5th Gen Maxima, but it's less than the load rating of 93 for the OEM 225/50R17s. Last but not least, I just looked up the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S on the Michelin web site. Michelin specifices a minimum rim width of 8.0" for 245/40R17 tires. The T&RA tables on page 5 of the FAQs also specify 8.0" as the minimum acceptable rim width for 245/40R17 tires.

Under the circumstances, 245/40R17 tires are not acceptable for your application.

Unnecessary. The T&RA tables are located on Page 5 of the FAQs. And the T&RA IS the final authority.

Wrong choice, Nikal. Go for 245/45R17s instead. They're just as plentiful as 235/45R17s and they're a better fit overall. BTW, for laughs and giggles, copy the page out of the T&RA tables that shows acceptable rim widths for 245/40R17 tires and take it with you the next time you go to Costco. Tell those guys they'd better learn to stop giving bad advice to their customers.

Oooopps!!! My bad...7.5's are what the car is running, so the 235/45/17's are not an issue this time!!

Before you jump on jjs, Blackgums100, perhaps you should review the quality of some of your comments in recent tire-related threads.

In life, you're either part of the problem or part of the solution!

Apologies to other .org members...

for that knee-jerk reaction and post.

It's just that individuals should do something MORE than NOT contribute to a thread, when they are more than happy and eager to jump on someone's case...

in this instance for no reason since I corrected my own erroneous answer.

If it appears that coat tails are being ridden...so be it.

A fact is a fact, no matter who presents it.

Sad? Mirror time bud.

Sorry to Y2 and jjs but let the newbies search and they will become better members.

So sick of, here comes Y2kse, blah, blah, should I let you, no after you. I wish they would sticky the damn subject. I will not reply to anymore more of these BS tire threads,

I'm not sure stickying the subject would do any good, Blackgums100. The FAQs already contain practically all of the info anyone needs in order to make a sensible decision on tire and rim choices. And human nature is such that most people would rather ask a question over and over again than research the matter for themselves.

The really unfortunate thing is that pointing out the facts often isn't enough. Invariably, someone will come along and try to perpetrate their opinion as facts. That's when I feel obliged to step in and set the matter straight.

Believe me, I'd rather not have to show up in another tire thread again. If only I could get a few other .org members to cooperate . . .

PS: That sounds a wee bit too altruistic. If the truth be known, I love whacking people over the head with a mallet when they're foolish enough to climb to the top of my rubber tree after I've warned them to stay away. And I NEVER miss!

Look again, my friend. The conversation centered on 245/40R17s, not 245/45R17s.

CORRECTION:

Good catch, NikaL. I fixed my original post. I was, in fact, referring to 245/40R17s in my discussion, not 245/45R17s. Sorry for the confusion.

so should I get 245/45R17s? Wouldn't is screw up speedometer reading? I'll be lowering my car with H&R's, wouldn't tires rub on?
Sorry I'm asking so many questions, but I don't want to pay over $900 for tires and have more problems?

I'm not sure about tires rubbing, but you'll be just fine with 245/45R17s from every other standpoint. And I'm pretty sure that some of the guys here are running 245/45R17s on lowered Maximas. Just check and make certain that your offset is correct.

Thanks y2kse. actually speedometer arror on 245/45R17's is 0.7%, which is even better fit that 235/45R17's.
Does anyone know if there is a difference with Pilot Sport A/S tires. I'm trying to order and they're telling me I can get tires for $226 or $275. they don't know what is the difference

Ok, if you are referring to a Pilot Sport vs. a Pilot Sport A/S, the first is more of a 'summer' tire, while the other is 'all season'. For spec's, treadwear, customer survey results, etc. on both tires a good place to check out is www.tirerack.com.

If not, exactly which tire are they looking up?

They have Pilot Sport A/S with 2 differnt prices. I was checking Michelin web site and they have Pilot Sport A/S in 2 different models. One has letter ZP next to them

Oh, that!! ZP = Zero Pressure

It is a 'run flat' design that is designed to get you to a repair facility (without having to take the tire off and put the little spare on), without having a major change in handling, etc.

I just put an order for Pilot Sport A/S (not ZP) 245/45R17 $922.16 w/tax. Should be in by the end of the week. I just hope I made a right choice and didn't go with cheaper brands.

The tires you purchased are expensive, but I've never heard anyone complain about them. You won't regret your purchase.

Now I have to come up with a story for my wife when she realizes there are $1000 gone from our savings account
"hunny 3 of the tire blew at the same time. there was a pile of nailes i guess. I can't risk driving a baby around with patched tires"
