nice change in gas mileage

Last week i replaced the origional spark plugs, at 66000 miles. I was getting about 290 miles to the tank bfr ( half highway and half city driving). i filled up the tank and have 403 miles, and the fuel light hasn't even come on yet...

i didn't know there would be such a big difference,,anyone care to shed some light on it??

Yea i heard about NGK. They work for VQ35 too right? i've been a little reluctant to get them because some say it doesn't really give you any hp gains, just makes the car run a little smoother. I'll check out the write up if it gets posted. Thanks for taking the time.

That's cool that you're getting better gas mileage, but 403 vs 290 just from spark plug changes?? WOW. Did you drive the same places, highway and city?

I just started using Chevron premium (like it says in the faq's) and my gas mileage has gone from 300 to 270mpg. It might have something to do with the SC, but honestly I don't drive any different than I did before.

i get ****ty mileage on my 2 month old 2k2 se. I fill my tank and it starts at about 240-255... then when my gauge is under a quarter tank...i go to refill it and i look at my miles for the tank and it's merely at 150... Could this just be from my driving? Almost all city..? should i get this checked out. It almost always says i get 14.8mpg..

this is the best mileage i have gotten since i bought the car. i have gone about 360 bfr, but never over 400. When i changed the plugs. i also went tri-synthetic, cleaned the K&N, cleaned the Throttle, aired up all the tires. But the driving was the same as i do everyday.
Every week: one trip to the rents, interstate about 150 miles, the rest city with some interstate. Also all those miles were with A/C
Lets see what happens when i fill up today. Will post the results

Yeah, I can't figure out why there is such a HUGE flux between what people are getting for gas mileage. Makes me a little worried...at least I'm getting close to 28 now...but I hope it never goes to 20 or 14!!! Maybe mods have a lot to do with it??? Even if you are always "getting on it" you should still get around 22....
I've gotten as good as 410 miles and as crappy as 340. on 15.5 galls.

Did I say I was doing all city driving?

I do quite a bit of hwy driving myself. Getting 30mpg would give you over 450miles on a tank. (assuming you're only using 15gals of it) I said I was getting between 340 and 410. Which puts me between 22 and 28...which should not be that hard to imagine...even with a fair amount of city driving.

Talk about the low end

I average about 19MPG on city driving and the best I have ever gotten on a full tank of 90% highway is 22MPG. I even drive nicer than I used to. I have seen a slight improvement over the last month but nothing major. I now have 10,000 miles on my ride and I got it the end of December...time for that extended warranty

I do alot of cruising, i'll admit... but i dont see why my mileage is so low.. 14.8!!! wtf! ive never got in reality over 240 to a tank.

92 octane or better, right??? Are you flooring it all the time? Are you shifting out of 1st gear???

Yeah, there is NO REASON to get that bad of mileage. Take it to the dealer...

Maybe it's those lights you modded... lol

I thought we had the 100K spark plugs?

The only time I've gotten near 400 mpg is when I drove all highway.

Come on people.

They give us another half liter and more hp and your crying about gas mileage. Why do you think they gave us 1 more gear, use it. If you shift like the manual says to and coast to red lights there is no reason you can't get 350+ per tank. I've gotten over 400 and as little as 270. It's all in how you drive. Use the power when you need to otherwise shift at lower rpm's

You can drive in 6th at under 2000rpms it's all about keeping the revs down and coasting when you can. Over 3k these things are hogs. If you have an auto, sorry (lol), just easy off the pedal some and let it shift earlier.

You wanna talk about bad gas mileage lets talk about my 02' 1500 Silverado 5.3L now that sucks it down and it has a 26 gallon tank!

Aren't NGK R stock plugs? I have a 2k auto and on the highway I can get over 400 miles to a tank. Personaly I don't care what the gas milage is, I didn't buy the car for the gas mileage. Watch tire presure it can make a diff in your fuel milage.

The NGK Platinums are the stock brand plugs. They are the only recommended plugs for 4th/5th gen engines. If you have a VQ35, it already has the stock NGK plugs. The plugs are good for 60k miles, perhaps more on the newer maximas.

McSly, your getting bad gas mileage cuz your engine isn't broken in yet. Give her some time! When I first got my Max, even nursing it through the break-in period, I got bad mpg. Then at about3k it started getting better and kept improving till I had about 8k, where it leveled off. Managed to pull off 31+mpg running 80mph with the a/c on up I95 from FL to PA.

I avg about 26-27mpg driving 200 miles a day. Part of that is thru Boston traffic in the morning and 128 South stop and go in the afternoon. I usually fill up at 1/4 I I have anywhere from 350-390 miles .

In fact I filled up this morning...lets see...384.4 miles so far divided by 14.167 gallons = 27.133479 mpg....and it took me 3 hours to get home last night so there was some pretty heavy traffic...not bad. When I do break free I do about 70-80mph so its not like I am babying it all the time to squeeze miles out of it.

Just went over 55,000 mile the other day and I'm about 7k past an oil change. Synthetic always....for 40.00 my local Jiffy Lube does an excellent job...although most JL's I wouldnt bring my car too.

Has anyone tried the Bosch Platinum 4+ spark plugs? I have 37k of pretty hard driving, and lots of mods so i was thinking of changing them. I put them in my old saab 9000 turbo and wow what a difference in smoothness. Car idled much better and ran smoother. My VQ is loseing that a little so i thought it would be time for a change. Now you guys say NGK is the only plug reccomended i am a little hesitant. Didn't someone else on the forum buy those iridium spark plugs? How are those? Thanks

Has anyone noticed a decrease in gas mileage after switching to Chevron Premium? I used to use it every few fill-ups and I noticed poorer gas mileage. I filled up wtih Chevron the last three times and each time I notice I'm getting about 270-280 MPG, whereas I used to use Texaco and got 290-310 MPG.

I know Chevron is supposed to help clean your fuel system with it's techron additive, but I wish gas mileage was better.

I didnt know that Chevron was still around. I havent seen one of them since my grandfather sold his in the early 80's. I believe they are extinct in Jersey. I have witnessed a change in gas milage depending on which gas I fill up with. I try to stay away from these little off beat stations.

I believe the 60,000 mile plug recommendation by Nissan is too long. I changed my plugs at 50,000 miles even though the plugs in the engine looked great! Made a big improvement in performance and milage. I'm going to change my plugs at 40,000 miles from now on. I installed new NGK Laser Platinum Plugs PFRG5-11 at the 50,000 mile mark.

Denso recommends changing their Iridium plugs at 30,000. I changed my original Factory NGKs at 51,000, plugs looked great but changed anyway. Butt dyno noticed big improvement in performance, smoother and quicker. Milage also improved in the range of 10%. I now plan on changing my plugs every 40,000 based on this. I only use NGK Laser Platinum Plugs (these are double platinum plugs) PFR5G-11. Nissan Direct Ignition System was designed to take advantage of Dual Platinum plugs. I would replace yours after 37,000 miles of hard driving but would stick with fore mentioned NGK Laser Platinums. If you change yours it would be interesting to hear your feedback. Also NGK is in the process of bringing out a hybrid plug, Iridium center electrode and platinum ground electrode, list is around $29.00 per plug. The ultimate plug would be a double Iridium plug but I figure it would cost $40 or more per plug. No one has plans to announce this plug it is a next logical step that's all.
Be well!!!!

Damn thats nice mpg. Unless of course ur driving differently with the new plugs, but still quite an increase. WOnder if the new plugs would have the same effect on a car with only 10K miles?
